 Dear ACS Community,

For those of you with children in the secondary school, you will be well aware that last week was our classroom without walls week. For those of you in the elementary school, you may be less familiar with this week of trips. This year, the focus was learning about Bolivia, and the 6th through 12th grades went to the following destinations: Lake Titicaca, Coroico, Sucre and Potosi, the salt flats, the missions, Madidi, and Toro Toro. The vast majority of our students traveled, but for those who could not travel, a robust local program saw students participating in internships and other distinct learning opportunities. Each year we have improved the trips by learning from the previous years.  

Of course, the trips would not be possible without the hard work of many people. I want to give a big thanks to all the faculty chaperones who looked after the students throughout the week. In addition, I would like to say a special thanks to Dr. Ann Peterson and Carolina Soliz in the secondary office for their tireless efforts to organize the trips. Ms. Soliz, in particular, took the lead in improving the overall organization of the process.

Thank you to everyone involved for making this impactful experience possible for our students.

Aquellos que tengan hijos en secundaria sabrán que la semana pasada fue nuestra semana de clases fuera del aula. Quienes estén en primaria, quizá no estén tan familiarizados con esta semana de viajes. Este año, el enfoque fue aprender sobre Bolivia, y desde el 6º al 12º grados visitaron los siguientes destinos: Lago Titicaca, Coroico, Sucre y Potosí, el Salar, las Misiones, Madidi y Toro Toro.  La gran mayoría de nuestros alumnos viajaron, pero para los que no pudieron viajar, un sólido programa local permitió que los alumnos participaran en prácticas profesionales y otras oportunidades de aprendizaje únicas. Cada año vamos mejorando los viajes ya que estamos aprendiendo de años anteriores.

Por supuesto, los viajes no serían posibles sin el esfuerzo de muchas personas. Quiero agradecer enormemente a todos los profesores chaperones que cuidaron a los alumnos durante toda la semana. Además, quisiera agradecer especialmente a la Dra. Ann Peterson y a Carolina Soliz, de la oficina de secundaria, por su incansable esfuerzo para organizar estos viajes. La Ms. Soliz, en particular, quien lideró la mejora de la organización general del proceso.

Gracias a todos los involucrados por hacer posible esta experiencia tan significativa para nuestros alumnos.

 Dear ACS Community,

Thank you to the parents, students, teachers, and administrators who made the Family Day Picnic in our 70th year such a success. In addition to the normal activities, we also inaugurated our new cafeteria. It was an emotional experience to watch our whole community pour into this first major new space on campus since the days of Herm Penland's superintendency. A heartfelt thanks goes out to our entire facilities committee, its chair Leo Varone, and Denise Barron who shepherded the project to completion.  Even more exciting than the inauguration is the prospect of seeing the cafeteria in use by our students starting today. I hope this new space becomes the heart of the ACS community for years to come.

This week is also exciting at ACS for other reasons. This week will be the Middle School Cougar Cup.  So, we hope you have a chance to come to school to cheer on our Cougar athletes.

In addition, our board search committee has been very busy behind the scenes vetting candidates to become the new ACS superintendent. This week the first of these candidates will visit ACS and have an opportunity to introduce themselves to our community. There will be opportunities for different stakeholder groups to meet with the candidate and provide feedback to the search committee. Our first candidate is Kim Philot. She is currently the middle school principal at Colegio Interamericano in Guatemala. We look forward to welcoming her to campus on Thursday and Friday of this week. Please be on the lookout for a message from each division of the school about an opportunity to meet her.

Gracias a los padres, alumnos, profesores y administradores que hicieron del Picnic del Día de la Familia en nuestro 70º aniversario un éxito. Además de las actividades habituales, también inauguramos nuestra nueva cafetería. Fue una experiencia emotiva ver a toda nuestra comunidad acudir a este primer gran espacio nuevo en el campus desde la época de la superintendencia de Herm Penland. Un sincero agradecimiento a todo nuestro Comité de Instalaciones, a su presidente, Leo Varone, y a Denise Barron, quienes lideraron el proyecto hasta su finalización. Aún más emocionante que la inauguración es la perspectiva de ver la cafetería siendo utilizada por nuestros alumnos a partir de hoy. Espero que este nuevo espacio se convierta en el corazón de la comunidad de ACS en los años venideros.

Además, esta semana también será emocionante en ACS por otras razones. Esta semana se celebrará la Copa Cougar de Middle School. Así que esperamos que tengan la oportunidad de pasar por el colegio a animar a nuestros deportistas Cougar.

Asimismo, nuestro comité de búsqueda de la junta Directiva ha estado muy ocupado tras bastidores evaluando a los candidatos para seleccionar al nuevo superintendente de ACS. Esta semana, el primero de estos candidatos visitará el ACS y tendrá la oportunidad de presentarse a nuestra comunidad. Habrá oportunidades para que diferentes grupos de interés se reúnan con el candidato y brinden su opinión al comité de búsqueda. Nuestra primera candidata es Kim Philot. Actualmente es directora de middle school en el Colegio Interamericano en Guatemala. Esperamos darle la bienvenida al campus el jueves y viernes de esta semana. Estén atentos a los mensajes de cada división del colegio sobre la oportunidad de conocerla.

Dear ACS Community,

This week at ACS, many preparations are underway for our family day picnic next Saturday, the 13th of September. This is a very special family day picnic because it is in our 70th year of serving the families of La Paz. There will be plenty of food for everyone as well as activities for kids and adults of all ages.  

In addition to all the activities, Saturday will be the grand opening of our newly remodeled cafeteria.  This is the first major construction project creating a new space on campus since the superintendency of Herm Penland in the 80's and 90's, and we can't wait to share it with you. To prepare for the grand opening, this week our cafeteria provider will be shifting their entire operations from their temporary quarters to the new space.  Our plan is to make this move without any disruption to food service for our students. As you can imagine, this is a busy time for our teams as they are simultaneously planning to make this move and preparing for the family day picnic. So, please give them a little grace as they complete these important tasks. 

We can't wait to see all of you at the family day picnic, and give you a chance to try out our new provider's food in addition to sampling all the other delicious offerings at the picnic.

Estimada Comunidad de ACS:

Esta semana en ACS, estamos realizando muchos preparativos para nuestro picnic del día de la familia, que tendrá lugar el próximo sábado 13 de septiembre. Este es un picnic familiar muy especial, ya que celebramos nuestro 70º aniversario sirviendo a las familias de La Paz. Habrá abundante comida para todos, así como actividades para niños y adultos de todas las edades.

Además de todas las actividades, el sábado será la gran inauguración de nuestra cafetería recientemente remodelada. Este es el primer gran proyecto de construcción que crea un nuevo espacio en el campus desde la superintendencia de Herm Penland en los años 80 y 90, y estamos ansiosos por compartirlo con ustedes. Para preparar la gran inauguración, esta semana nuestro proveedor de la cafetería trasladará todas sus operaciones de las instalaciones temporales a su nuevo espacio. Nuestro plan es realizar este cambio sin interrumpir el servicio de comidas para nuestros alumnos. Como se pueden imaginar, este es un momento muy ocupado para nuestros equipos, ya que simultáneamente están planeando la mudanza y preparando el picnic familiar. Así que, por favor, tengan paciencia mientras completan estas tareas importantes.

Esperamos verlos a todos en el picnic del día de la familia y darles la oportunidad de probar la comida de nuestro nuevo proveedor, además de degustar todas las demás delicias que se ofrecerán en el picnic.

Dear ACS Community,

Today starts a busy month at ACS. We have the family day picnic on the 13th that our community is busy preparing for. Thank you to the parents, students, and teachers that are all working to make this event a success.  

The week of the 15th will be an intense week for many of our faculty working to increase our capacity to deliver high-quality instruction in English literacy. This effort follows directly from our new mission. Our mission says:

We are a supportive community committed to one another's growth and well-being through transformative English-based American education. We empower learners to be a force for good in an ever-evolving world.

Guided by this mission, we must constantly develop and enhance our ability to deliver a transformative English-based American education. A transformative education does not stand still; it must continuously evolve and move forward.

Finally, the week of the 22nd will be the secondary classroom without walls trips. Our secondary team has been working hard since last year to make sure these trips are memorable educational experiences for our secondary students.

Hoy es el inicio de un mes ajetreado en ACS. El día 13 tendremos el picnic del ‘Día de la Familia’, para el cual nuestra comunidad se está preparando con gran entusiasmo. Gracias a los padres, alumnos y profesores que están trabajando para que este evento sea un éxito.

La semana del 15 será intensa para muchos de nuestros profesores, quienes se esfuerzan por aumentar nuestra capacidad para impartir una enseñanza de alta calidad en lectoescritura en inglés. Este esfuerzo se deriva directamente de nuestra nueva misión. Nuestra misión dice:

Somos una comunidad solidaria, comprometida con el crecimiento y el bienestar mutuos a través de una educación estadounidense transformadora basada en el inglés. Empoderamos a los estudiantes para que sean una fuerza positiva en un mundo en constante evolución.

Guiados por esta misión, debemos desarrollar y mejorar constantemente nuestra capacidad para impartir una educación estadounidense transformadora basada en el inglés. Una educación transformadora no se detiene; debe evolucionar y avanzar continuamente.

Para finalizar, la semana del 22 se realizarán los viajes de "Clases fuera del Aula" para nuestros alumnos de secundaria. Nuestro equipo de secundaria ha estado trabajando arduamente desde el año pasado para garantizar que estos viajes sean experiencias educativas memorables para nuestros alumnos.
