 Dear ACS Community,

As we enter the fourth week of school, we continue to rebuild connection and community after the disruptions of the pandemic.  This past weekend, my wife and I welcomed ACS families new to La Paz at an open house at our home.  It was great to be able to help build connections between new and long-time ACS families.  This morning, I met with our volunteer parent representatives, and they helped to chart the course for activities this year.  This week, we will also host a visit from the president of the AMISA organization of international schools in South America.  This visit will help us to rebuild connections to the international school world in our region.  This, however, is just the start, and I'm very excited to announce a number of upcoming community events.  

First, the Family Day Picnic will return to ACS on the 24th of September.  Due to the pandemic, my family and I have not yet experienced this event, but we have heard a lot about it.  So, we join all the ACS community in eagerly anticipating its return.  

In addition, I am pleased to announce a brand-new ACS event.  On the 22nd of October, we will have the first ACS Gala dinner.  This will be a formal event with dinner and dancing.  It will also feature a silent auction.  All the proceeds from the event will go toward an entirely new ACS playground for the students.  Please save the date on your calendar and look for more information from the Gala Committee.  Let's have an exciting evening together while creating a lasting legacy for ACS students now and into the future.

Finally, I would like to invite all interested ACS parents to join me on Thursday the 15th of September from 6:30–8:00 PM.  At that time, we will begin developing the ideas that will chart ACS's future.  In this session entitled, Re-envisioning ACS's Mission, we will work together to examine our current mission and also to create and explore some bold new alternatives.  Your work, along with that of students and faculty, will propel ACS into the future.  In addition to the excitement of working with these new ideas, I am looking forward to having yet another opportunity to meet all of you in person and work together.   Please consider joining me.

A medida que ingresamos a la cuarta semana de clases, continuamos reconstruyendo la comunidad y el vínculo con ella luego de las interrupciones de la pandemia.  El pasado fin de semana, mi esposa y yo recibimos familias de ACS nuevas en La Paz en una jornada de puertas abiertas en nuestra casa.  Fue muy bueno poder ayudar a construir conexiones entre familias nuevas y antiguas de ACS.  Esta mañana, me reuní con los padres representantes voluntarios, y nos ayudaron a trazar el rumbo de las actividades de este año.  Esta semana también recibiremos la visita del presidente de la organización de colegios internacionales en América del Sur, AMISA.  Esta visita nos ayudará a reconstruir las conexiones con el mundo escolar internacional en nuestra región.  Sin embargo, esto es solo el comienzo y estoy muy emocionado de anunciar una serie de próximos eventos de nuestra comunidad.

 

Primero, el Picnic del Día de la Familia regresará a ACS el 24 de septiembre.  Debido a la pandemia, mi familia y yo aún no hemos experimentado este evento, pero hemos escuchado mucho al respecto.  Por eso, nos unimos a toda la comunidad de ACS para esperar con ansias su regreso.

 

Además, me complace anunciar un evento totalmente nuevo de ACS.  El 22 de octubre, tendremos la primera Cena de Gala de ACS.  Este será un evento formal con cena y baile.  También contará con una subasta silenciosa.  Todas las ganancias del evento se destinarán a un patio de juegos de ACS completamente nuevo para los alumnos.  Por favor, marque la fecha en su calendario y busque más información con el Comité de Gala.  Tendremos una noche emocionante juntos mientras creamos un legado duradero para los alumnos de ACS ahora y en el futuro.

 

Finalmente, me gustaría invitar a todos los padres interesados a que me acompañen el día jueves 15 de septiembre de 6:30 a 8:00 p.m.  En ese momento, comenzaremos a desarrollar las ideas que trazarán el futuro de ACS.  En esta sesión titulada Re-imaginando la Misión de ACS, trabajaremos juntos para examinar nuestra misión actual y también para crear y explorar algunas alternativas nuevas y audaces.  Su trabajo, al igual que el de los alumnos y profesores, impulsará a ACS hacia el futuro.  Además de la emoción de trabajar con estas nuevas ideas, será un gusto tener otra oportunidad para conocerlos a todos en persona y trabajar juntos.  Por favor considere acompañarme ese día.

Dear ACS Community,

It was wonderful to welcome so many of you to campus at the beginning of last week for our back-to-school nights.  I met several families who had been with ACS for some time, but were just getting their first opportunity to see our beautiful campus.  This is just the start of many in-person events.  Some will be new, and others will represent the return of treasured traditions.  For instance, a special event for families new to La Paz will happen this weekend, but we have also begun planning to bring back the family day picnic and classroom without walls trips.  Please be on the lookout for more information about these exciting events.

About half a century ago, the world of work began to change rapidly, being increasingly disrupted by technological advances as the years rolled by.  Many jobs involving routine work, algorithms, or procedural skills were computerized, automated and eliminated.  While teaching lagged a little, these changes also eventually began to transform education.  Workplaces demanded employees who could collaborate on solving problems of ever-increasing complexity with ever-increasing speed.  This forced the abandonment of teaching based on worksheets and algorithms in favor of schools like ACS that aspire to inspire skills like critical thinking and lifelong learning to produce responsible global citizens.  This transformation in education requires more and more of teachers.   It requires that teachers not see their work as a static presentation of material, but rather as a continual feedback cycle involving their actions and student responses intended to continually optimize learning.  This is very difficult to do in isolation.  So, we have been developing the ability of all faculty members to act as peer coaches, providing feedback to one another to improve student learning.  An external consultant assisted us in this during the orientation week, and our teachers have begun embracing it enthusiastically.  I am very proud of the work that our faculty is doing every day to continually improve the quality of education that your children receive.

Fue maravilloso dar la bienvenida a muchos de ustedes en el campus a principios de la semana pasada para la ‘Noche de regreso al colegio’.  Conocí a varias familias que ya están en ACS hace algún tiempo, sin embargo, esta fue su primera oportunidad para ver nuestro hermoso campus.  Este es sólo el inicio de muchos eventos presenciales.  Algunos de ellos serán nuevos, y otros representarán el retorno de tradiciones atesoradas.  Por ejemplo, esta semana se llevará a cabo un evento especial para familias nuevas en La Paz; pero también hemos comenzado a planificar el retorno del “Family Day Picnic” (Picnic Familiar) y los viajes de “Classroom Without Walls” (Aulas Sin Fronteras).  Estén atentos a mayor información sobre estos emocionantes eventos.

 

Hace aproximadamente medio siglo, el mundo del trabajo comenzó a cambiar rápidamente, siendo cada vez más afectado por los avances tecnológicos a medida que pasaban los años.  Muchos trabajos que involucraban trabajo de rutina, algoritmos o habilidades de procedimiento fueron computarizados, automatizados y eliminados. Si bien la enseñanza se retrasó un poco, estos cambios eventualmente también comenzaron a transformar la educación.  Los lugares de trabajo demandaban empleados que pudieran colaborar en la resolución de problemas de complejidad cada vez mayor a una velocidad también en aumento.  Esto obligó a abandonar la enseñanza basada en hojas de trabajo y algoritmos a favor de colegios como el ACS que aspiran a inspirar habilidades como el pensamiento crítico y el aprendizaje permanente para producir ciudadanos globales responsables.  Esta transformación en la educación requiere más y más de los docentes.  Requiere que los profesores no vean su trabajo como una presentación estática de material, sino más bien como un ciclo continuo de retroalimentación que involucra sus acciones y las respuestas de los alumnos con la intención de optimizar continuamente el aprendizaje.  Esto es muy difícil de hacer de forma aislada.  Por lo tanto, hemos estado desarrollando en todos los docentes la capacidad para actuar como entrenadores de sus pares, brindando retroalimentación entre sí para mejorar el aprendizaje de los alumnos.  Un consultor externo nos ayudó con esto durante la semana de orientación, y nuestros maestros han comenzado a aceptarlo con entusiasmo.  Estoy muy orgulloso del trabajo que nuestros docentes están haciendo todos los días para mejorar continuamente la calidad de la educación que reciben sus hijos.

Dear ACS Community,

Welcome to the first full week of the 2022-2023 academic year.  This week, we are delighted to invite all parents to the first in-person back to school nights in quite some time.  Back to school night gives parents the opportunity to see the campus, meet teachers and administrators, as well as get a sense of what a school day is like for children.  The Elementary School will host back to school night this evening, and the Secondary School will host back to school night tomorrow evening.  We hope to be able to welcome all of you to our ACS campus.  

Of course, this week also marks the first full week that students are back on campus.  It is wonderful to see their smiling faces and hear their happy voices throughout the campus once again.  These simple things that we long took for granted now seem very special after the restrictions of the pandemic.

I want to thank all of our parents once again for completing enrollment on our new online system.  Please accept my personal apologies for any inconvenience that you may have experienced, and thank you for your patience as we brought this system into use.  In the long term, we expect the system to provide greater convenience for our parent community as well as increased efficiency and accuracy for our school teams.

Bienvenidos a la primera semana completa del año académico 2022-2023.  Esta semana estamos encantados de invitar a todos los padres a la primera reunión en persona de “Noche de regreso al colegio”, después de mucho tiempo. La “Noche de regreso al colegio” brinda a los padres la oportunidad de ver el campus, conocer a los profesores y administrativos, así como también tener una idea de cómo es un día de clases para los alumnos.  Esta noche Primaria es la anfitriona de la “Noche de regreso al colegio”, y Secundaria será la anfitriona mañana por la noche.  Esperamos poder darles la bienvenida a todos ustedes a nuestro campus de ACS.

Por supuesto, esta semana también marca la primera semana completa en que los alumnos regresan al campus. Es maravilloso ver sus caras sonrientes y escuchar sus voces felices en todo el campus una vez más.  Estas cosas simples que durante mucho tiempo dábamos por sentado, ahora parecen muy especiales después de las restricciones de la pandemia.

Quiero agradecer a todos los padres una vez más por completar la inscripción con nuestro nuevo sistema en línea.  Pido disculpas por cualquier inconveniente que puedan haber tenido.  Asimismo, agradezco su paciencia mientras pusimos en uso este sistema.  A largo plazo, esperamos que el sistema proporcione una mayor comodidad para nuestra comunidad de padres, así como una mayor eficiencia y precisión para nuestros equipos escolares.

8 August 2022 - Welcome to the 2022-2023 Academic Year

Dear ACS Community,

I am delighted to welcome you to the 2022-2023 school year at ACS.  Our teachers returned last week for the first fully in-person orientation week in quite some time.  Each day, there has been an incredibly positive spirit in the room as the faculty moves forward, gaining momentum in their preparations for welcoming students back on Wednesday.  One highlight of this week has been a series of externally facilitated workshops on peer coaching.  These workshops continue work that our Instructional Leadership Team started last year.  They are helping to bring a culture of continuous improvement to every classroom across ACS.  In addition, just today, an external consultant helped our faculty begin a discussion about our assessment practices across the school.  In addition to these exciting academic initiatives, you will have recently noticed another change that we have implemented.  Namely, a new admissions' system.  This system will have a transformative effect on the efficiency of our operations here at ACS.  We know, however, that there were a number of bumps in the road as we got it up and running.  We pushed the developers and our internal team very hard to get it up and running this year, rather than waiting for next year.  We know that this push caused the rollout not to be as smooth as we would have liked, and we thank you very much for your patience and your feedback during the process.  With that feedback, we will be able to tailor the system to be a great asset to ACS.  In addition, it will reduce the burden on parents during re-registration.  

This will be an exciting and dynamic year at ACS.  I am looking forward to the return of beloved traditions as well as the flourishing of new ideas and initiatives, and I'm excited to be on this journey with you.

Estoy encantado de dar la bienvenida al año escolar 2022-2023 en ACS. Nuestros profesores regresaron la semana pasada para la primera semana de orientación completamente presencial en bastante tiempo. Cada día, ha habido un espíritu increíblemente positivo en la sala a medida que la facultad avanza, ganando impulso en sus preparativos para dar la bienvenida a los estudiantes el miércoles. Un aspecto destacado de esta semana ha sido una serie de talleres facilitados externamente sobre peer coaching. Estos talleres continúan el trabajo que nuestro Equipo de Liderazgo Educativo comenzó el año pasado. Están ayudando a llevar una cultura de mejora continua a cada salón de clases de ACS. Además, justo hoy, un consultor externo ayudó a nuestra facultad a iniciar una discusión sobre nuestras prácticas de evaluación en todo el colegio. Además de estas emocionantes iniciativas académicas, recientemente habrán notado otro cambio que hemos implementado. Esto es, un nuevo sistema de admisiones. Este sistema tendrá un efecto transformador en la eficiencia de nuestras operaciones aquí en ACS. Sabemos, sin embargo, que hubo una serie de obstáculos en el camino cuando lo pusimos en marcha. Presionamos mucho a los desarrolladores y a nuestro equipo interno para ponerlo en funcionamiento este año, en lugar de esperar al próximo. Sabemos que este empujón hizo que la implementación no fuera tan fluida como nos hubiera gustado, y le agradecemos mucho su paciencia y su retroalimentación durante el proceso. Con esa retroalimentación, podremos adaptar el sistema para que sea un gran activo para ACS. Además, reducirá la carga de los padres durante la reinscripción. Este será un año emocionante y dinámico en ACS.
