Last week our campus was filled with life at a number of different activities. I have never seen our auditorium as full as it was for the Art show featuring Mamani Mamani. Similarly, our theater was standing room only for the Secondary talent show. Last week also featured the General Assembly, Board Elections, and the Elementary Book Character Parade.

This week, we continue our activities with another concert at the Hard Rock Cafe tonight. In addition, on Friday we have STEAM family afternoon at the elementary school.

La semana pasada nuestro campus se llenó de vida con una serie de actividades diferentes. Nunca había visto nuestro auditorio tan lleno como lo estuvo para la exhibición de arte con la especial presentación de Mamani Mamani. Igualmente, nuestro teatro solo tenía espacio para el espectáculo de talentos de secundaria. La semana pasada también hubo la Asamblea General, las Elecciones de la Directiva y el Desfile de Personajes del Libro de Primaria.
En cuanto a nuestros eventos informativos, no se preocupen si se pierden algo que querían ver. Pueden encontrar grabaciones de muchos de nuestros eventos en el Cougar Hub en este enlace.
Esta semana continuamos nuestras actividades con otro concierto en el Hard Rock Café esta noche. Además, el viernes tenemos la tarde familiar STEAM en Primaria.

It was fabulous to see students, parents, teachers, and community members celebrating earth day together last Friday. The campus was alive with music, activities, and opportunities. Thank you to everyone who made it possible throughout the day.
Also on Friday morning, I enjoyed sharing with interested parents about the past, present, and future of the ACS mathematics program. Attendees saw that through the hard work of our teachers, we are rapidly modernizing our mathematics program to meet the needs of the next century instead of the last. As with all of our recent parent informational meetings, we will be posting the video on the cougar hub with a translation soon.
This week, of course, we have our General Assembly and Board Elections on Wednesday. Please join us to hear a review of the great things happening at ACS this year. In addition, before the General Assembly, there will be an art show starting at 5:30 PM. We will have a very special guest for that event. The famous Bolivian artist Mamani Mamani will join us.
We will round out the week with the elementary book fair and the secondary talent show. We hope to see you on campus this week for one or more of these events.

I think the parents, coaches, and teachers who accompanied our secondary students to the Friendship Games last week would agree with me that our community should be justifiably proud of our students. Not only did they demonstrate their prowess in the events, but they also showed good sportsmanship, kindness, and magnanimity. I was especially heartened to see our cheerleaders as well as many of our students show up to support all of the events, including those that were nonathletic. This built a great team spirit and contrasted favorably with the other teams. Great work Cougars!
On a more somber note, I would like to invite you to a presentation about all that we do at ACS to make child protection a priority. This event will be tomorrow evening at 5 PM in the Auditorium.
In addition, on Friday at 8:15 AM, I will be presenting a session on the past, present, and future of Mathematics at ACS. This session is an opportunity to step back and examine the improvements that we have made in the past few years, as well as to give a preview of what is to come. In addition, I'll discuss why these changes were necessary and how we are supporting continuous improvement at all levels.
Next, I want to remind you to check your email for information about how to apply for Financial Aid. Remember, this financial aid is targeted toward families experiencing temporary hardship. Applications for Financial Aid are due on the tenth of May.
Finally, I want to encourage you to come to our General Assembly and Board Elections next week on April 24th. The doors will open at 5:30 to view our art show with our special guest Mamani Mamani. At 6:30, we will have a presentation about the state of the school. The elections will close at 7:00 PM, and we hope to announce the winners by 7:30. We hope you will join us on this exciting night, but even if you can't; please look for the individualized link to vote in your email on the morning of the 24th. Note, only members in good standing who have paid their tuition through the 22nd of March will receive a ballot. Links to candidate videos are attached to this message.
Creo que los padres, entrenadores y profesores que acompañaron a nuestros alumnos de secundaria a los Juegos de la Amistad la semana pasada estarán muy de acuerdo conmigo en que nuestra comunidad debería estar orgullosa con toda razón de nuestros alumnos. No solo demostraron su destreza en los eventos, sino que también mostraron buen espíritu deportivo, amabilidad y magnanimidad. You may have noticed that we had a vaccine clinic on our calendar for today. Unfortunately, the health authorities were unable to source the vaccine for our clinic. We intend to reschedule when a supply is available.
This week, we will be sending our middle and high school teams off to the Friendship Games in Cochabamba. Today we will have pep rallies to celebrate our athletes and send them off with Cougar spirit. I look forward to seeing many of you today.
Toward the end of this month, we will have an important annual event in the life of our school. That event is our General Assembly and board elections. In the general assembly, you will hear about progress throughout the year in all areas of the school. In addition, the board elections are especially critical this year because seven of our ten board positions are up for election. Please be on the lookout for a ballot and instructions on casting it. Remember, you must be up-to-date with your financial obligations to ACS through March to be eligible to cast a ballot.

A finales de este mes, tendremos un evento anual importante en la vida de nuestro colegio. Este evento es nuestra Asamblea General y las elecciones de la junta directiva. En la asamblea general, escucharán sobre el progreso a lo largo de todo el año en todas las áreas de nuestro colegio. Además, las elecciones de la junta directiva son especialmente críticas este año porque siete de nuestros diez puestos en la junta están sujetos a elección. We hope that you enjoyed your break and are ready for the final quarter of school. The final quarter is a busy one in the life of any school, and ACS is no exception. Some upcoming highlights include the Middle School and High School Friendship Games in Cochabamba next week. On a related note, the Elementary Cougar Cup will be coming up in May. In the third week of April, we have our General Assembly and board elections. Then, in May, our end-of-year activities will begin. We look forward to a strong finish to the year and to seeing many of you at these events.

Last week was a wonderful week to see students excel in activities beyond the classroom. We saw our middle school and high school students compete in both basketball and track & field as part of the Cougar Cup Competition. This year we had ten different teams that joined us for different parts of the completion.
In addition, many of our music students performed on the stage at the Hard Rock Cafe. If you saw them, I'm sure that you were impressed like I was. It was an emotional experience to watch these students bravely stand in the middle of the stage and share their talent with the community. It was also a privilege to witness the incredible growth that the students have made in their music ability since our first concert at the end of the pandemic.
Last week also was an exciting first for ACS. We hosted what has been described as the first chess tournament at a Bolivian school where competitors were eligible to receive an official, internationally sanctioned ranking. It was quite a site to behold, as the entire auditorium was packed with chess players deep in thought.
Please be aware that to support preparations for the census, ACS will not have any in-person classes on Friday the 22nd of March. We will have Elementary School Conferences, as these are not direct educational activities. Secondary school teachers will send out more information about virtual work.
Finally, please remember that the 25th to the 29th of March is a school break.

La semana pasada fue una semana maravillosa para ver a nuestros alumnos sobresalir en actividades fuera del aula. Vimos a nuestros estudiantes de Secundaria competir tanto en baloncesto como en atletismo como parte de la competencia de la Copa Cougar. Este año tuvimos diez equipos diferentes que se unieron a nosotros en diferentes partes de la finalización.
Además, muchos de nuestros alumnos de música actuaron en el escenario del Hard Rock Café. Si los vieron, estoy seguro de que quedaron tan impresionados como yo. Fue una experiencia emotiva ver a estos alumnos pararse valientemente en medio del escenario y compartir su talento con la comunidad. También fue un privilegio ver el increíble avance que los alumnos han logrado en su habilidad musical desde nuestro primer concierto al finalizar la pandemia.
Asimismo, la semana pasada fue una emocionante novedad para ACS. Organizamos lo que se ha denominado como el primer torneo de ajedrez en un colegio boliviano, donde los competidores eran elegibles para ser clasificados internacionalmente. Era algo digno de contemplar, ya que todo el auditorio estaba lleno de jugadores de ajedrez sumidos en pensamientos profundos.
Por favor, tengan en cuenta que para apoyar los preparativos para el censo, el ACS no tendrá clases presenciales el viernes 22 de marzo. Sí tendremos las Conferencias de Primaria, ya que estas no son actividades educativas directas. Los profesores de Secundaria enviarán mayor información sobre el trabajo virtual.

We wish all of our ACS families safety as the whole community of La Paz cleans up after the flooding. We also appreciate your continued flexibility as we try to support community members who have transportation difficulties associated with the rain.
Despite this, we had an engaged group of parents who attended the middle school coffee this morning for a discussion about the curriculum review process and an update on ongoing improvements in middle school. Thanks to parent feedback, we have many ideas and plans for future parent coffee meetings. We look forward to seeing you at one soon.
I'm also happy to share with the community that work on our internet infrastructure begins today. The first step will be running new higher capacity fiber optic cable throughout the campus. This will form the foundation of a new, stable, and fast internal network that will take ACS into the future.
Finally, I'm pleased to announce that we will continue the Cougar Cup games as planned. Most of the other schools have confirmed their attendance whether or not they had school this morning. At the time of writing, I'm hopeful to have a sunny afternoon for the games. I hope to see you on campus to support our athletes.

Deseamos que todas nuestras familias de ACS estén seguras mientras toda la comunidad de La Paz se dedica a limpiar luego de la inundación. Asimismo, apreciamos su continua flexibilidad mientras intentamos apoyar a los miembros de la comunidad que tienen dificultades de transporte asociadas con la lluvia.
A pesar de esto, tuvimos un grupo comprometido de padres que asistieron al café de Intermedio (Middle School) esta mañana para conversar sobre el proceso de revisión del plan de estudios y una actualización sobre las mejoras continuas de Intermedio. Gracias a los comentarios de los padres, tenemos muchas ideas y planes para futuras reuniones de la hora del café para padres. Esperamos verlos pronto en una de estas reuniones.
También estoy feliz de compartir con la comunidad que el trabajo en nuestra infraestructura de Internet comienza hoy. El primer paso será instalar un nuevo cable de fibra óptica de mayor capacidad en todo el campus. Esto será la base de una red interna nueva, estable y rápida que llevará a ACS al futuro.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey to determine themes for new statements of Mission, Vision, and Core Values. Your input will guide ACS into the future. The steering committee will meet today to analyze the results and design methods of understanding at a deeper level the meaning behind the themes the community has prioritized.
If you are in the elementary or middle school, I hope to see you at our coffee mornings devoted to understanding our curriculum review process and how it will shape instructional improvement. The elementary meeting is this Friday. The Middle School meeting is next Monday.
The new continuous curriculum review process that we designed and implemented last semester has a far-reaching impact. Not only do we have teams using this process to look critically at specific curricular areas, but they are also designing improvement plans and the process is driving resource allocation through our budget. We can't wait to tell you more at the coffee morning.

No solo tenemos equipos que utilizan este proceso para observar críticamente las áreas curriculares específicas, sino que también están diseñando planes de mejora y el proceso está impulsando la asignación de recursos a través de nuestro presupuesto. I have been delighted to get an opportunity to see and hear from so many of you in the last few weeks. The focus groups, functional area committees and parent coffees have allowed us to get a great deal of input from students, parents, and teachers. As we are moving forward quickly in all areas of the school, it is critical that we get this input to make sure that we arrive at a place that our community wants to be.
As an example, we had more than 50 people at a coffee last Friday morning focused on learning and teaching at ACS. We are already planning to use the information gathered with our faculty and staff. In addition, it provided rich information about potential topics for future events.
We continued our work partnering with our community this morning with an event examining experiential learning and our classroom without walls program. You may not realize that classroom without walls at ACS started back in August of 1986 with trips to Sucre, Sajama, and the Incallajta ruins in Cochabamba. At that time, it was limited to the junior class and students could choose between trips. After almost 40 years, now is an exciting time to re-examine the program, comparing it to experiential learning programs around the world and setting new goals. I very much enjoyed starting that work with some of you this morning.

Quizás no sepan que el programa Clases fuera de las aulas en ACS tuvo su inicio allá por agosto de 1986 con viajes a Sucre, Sajama y las ruinas de Incallajta en Cochabamba. En esas épocas, los viajes se limitaban a los juniors, y los alumnos podían elegir entre viajes. Después de casi 40 años, es emocionante reexaminar el programa, comparándolo con programas de aprendizaje experienciales en todo el mundo y estableciendo nuevos objetivos. Last week was a short week, but it was filled with positivity. On Wednesday afternoon, the first day after the break, ACS hosted an event that we call teachers teaching teachers. The event consisted of a series of workshops presented by our faculty. It was attended not only by our teachers but also by teachers from, the German school, Saint Andrews's school, and Highlands school. It was impressive to see our teachers sharing the great things going on in ACS classrooms. Professional development is critical for teachers and it takes many forms. Sending teachers to external workshops, bringing in consultants, and providing internal training are just a few of the modalities. It is, perhaps, most impressive, however, to see our faculty actively engaged in helping one another to improve learning and teaching.
Last week, I was also able to review recent changes in our provision for learning support and child protection. In both cases, I'm pleased to say that we are dramatically improving our ability to support children and keep them safe.
Last week, we also hosted focus groups with participation from all stakeholders. They focused on potential new themes for our mission, vision, and core values. This week, our steering committee is analyzing that data along with data from work in 2022 to create a community wide survey that will identify priorities among these themes. Please be on the lookout for a link to this survey on Friday. We want your input.

La semana pasada fue una semana corta pero llena de positividad. El miércoles por la tarde, el primer día después del receso, ACS organizó un evento denominado “profesores enseñando a profesores”. El evento consistió en una serie de talleres presentados por nuestra facultad. Asistieron no sólo nuestros profesores sino también profesores de los Colegios Alemán, Saint Andrew’s y Highlands. Fue impresionante ver a nuestros profesores compartir las grandes cosas que suceden en las aulas de ACS. El desarrollo profesional es fundamental para los docentes y adopta muchas formas. Enviar docentes a talleres externos, contratar consultores y proporcionar capacitación interna son sólo algunas de las modalidades. Sin embargo, quizás lo más impresionante fue ver a nuestros profesores involucrados activamente en ayudarse unos a otros para mejorar el aprendizaje y la enseñanza.
Así mismo, la semana pasada pude revisar los cambios recientes en nuestra provisión de apoyo al aprendizaje y protección infantil. En ambos casos, me complace decir que estamos mejorando drásticamente nuestra capacidad para apoyar a nuestros niños y mantenerlos seguros.
La semana pasada también organizamos grupos focales con la participación de todas las partes interesadas. Se centraron en posibles nuevos temas para nuestra misión, visión y valores fundamentales. Esta semana, nuestro comité directivo está analizando esos datos junto con los datos del trabajo en 2022 para crear una encuesta a nivel comunitario que identificará las prioridades entre estos temas. Our strategic planning process is in full swing. A link to a video explanation of the process is included at the end of my message. A short time remains for you to express your opinions concerning the current state of Learning Structures as well as Health, Safety, and Security. You can do so through the links at the bottom of my message. In addition, invitations to seven different focus groups are going out to randomly selected community members this week. If you receive one, please consider joining us. We want to make participation as broad and representative as possible.
We recognize that there is a lot of concern in the community about a master plan. We want to assure you that no decisions have been made, no contracts have been written, and no money has been spent on master planning at this point. All communications about the master planning process have been for information purposes to clarify what it is and why it is important. While we recognize the need for extensive integrated planning when contemplating any large-scale construction or renovation, we understand that some of our community would prefer that we not pursue campus planning at this moment. With this in mind, want to assure our entire community that decisions concerning master planning will not be made until after the strategic planning is complete.
On a more celebratory note, both schools will commemorate Carnival on Friday. Even the teachers and administrators will perform a folkloric dance to celebrate Bolivian traditions. We hope you will join us on campus to celebrate together.
Also remember that school will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, February 12th and 13th in celebration of Carnival.

Queremos asegurarles que no se han tomado decisiones, no se han redactado contratos y no se ha gastado dinero en planificación maestra hasta el momento. Con esto en mente, quiero asegurar a toda nuestra comunidad que las decisiones relativas a la planificación maestra no se tomarán hasta que se complete la planificación estratégica.
En un tono más festivo, ambos colegios celebrarán el Carnaval este viernes. Incluso los profesores y administrativos bailarán una danza folclórica para celebrar las tradiciones bolivianas. Esperamos que se unan a nosotros en el campus para celebrar juntos.
Recuerden también que el colegio permanecerá cerrado el lunes 12 y martes 13 de febrero por celebración del Carnaval.

As you are aware, ACS is in the midst of a strategic planning process. February will be a busy month regarding strategic planning, and I want to make you aware of two processes that are going on simultaneously that have opportunities for participation. The first process concerns randomly selected Focus Groups that will be developing new themes for our mission, vision, and values. The second involves providing input on the current state of ACS.
Focus Groups:
The Steering Committee for Strategic Planning composed of students, parents, teachers, and administrators will be conducting Focus Groups on 15 February. The participants in the Focus Groups will be selected randomly from all stakeholder groups. The purpose of these groups is to elicit themes for new statements of mission, vision, and core values. After the initial themes emerge, the entire community will be surveyed to gauge broad commitment to different themes. If you have been selected to participate in the Focal Groups you will receive a separate email.
Current State of ACS:
As part of our strategic planning process, we are utilizing the standards from our NEASC accrediting body to guide an analysis of the current state of ACS. We are asking our community to complete self-ratings on NEASC Foundation Standards 1 and 3 (please see ACS Newsletter post from Jan 19).
All ACS parents are invited to complete the following surveys by Thursday, February 15th:
Once individual responses are collected, we will come to consensus on our ratings during an in-person or virtual meeting on:
Thursday, February 22nd at 6:00pm
Whether the meeting is online or in-person will be determined by the results of the final question of the survey. Once the survey has closed, we will confirm the format of the meeting.
Filling out the survey does not obligate you to attend the meeting. Either way, your input is highly valued and will contribute to the process of coming to consensus.

Como ustedes saben, ACS se encuentra en medio de un proceso de planificación estratégica. Febrero será un mes ocupado en cuanto a planificación estratégica se refiere, y quiero informarles sobre dos procesos que se están dando simultáneamente y que proporcionan oportunidades de participación. El primer proceso se refiere a grupos focales seleccionados al azar que desarrollarán nuevos temas para nuestra misión, visión y valores. El segundo implica proporcionar información sobre el estado actual de ACS.
Grupos de enfoque:
El Comité Directivo de Planificación Estratégica compuesto por estudiantes, padres, maestros y administradores conducirá grupos focales el 15 de febrero. El propósito de estos grupos es generar temas para nuevas declaraciones de misión, visión y valores fundamentales. Ya sea la reunión en línea o en persona, ésta estará determinada por los resultados de la pregunta final de la encuesta. Una vez cerrada la encuesta, confirmaremos el formato de la reunión.
El completar la encuesta no les obliga a asistir a la reunión. De cualquier manera, sus aportes son muy valorados y contribuirán al proceso para llegar a un consenso.

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend. This week at school, we have several exciting events. On Thursday, we will have a grand re-opening of the climbing wall. You may know that the climbing wall and its associated equipment have been updated and refurbished over the past few months. We are eager to showcase the new facility to our community. So, please join us on Thursday.
On Friday, we have two events. From 8:15 to 8:45 in the morning, I will host a Superintendent's coffee to update the community on the strategic planning process. Strategic planning is a critical process in the life of a school, but to do it in a way that gathers input from the entire community is a complex endeavor. I know there are many questions concerning this process, and I hope to give you an update and an opportunity to ask questions on Friday. Even if you can't make it on Friday, I plan to update the community regularly on this process, and we will also record the event.
The second event is the secondary awards ceremony honoring student performance in semester one. It will start at 10:50 AM in the theater.

Quizás sea de su conocimiento que el muro de escalada y su equipamiento asociado ha sido actualizado y renovado durante los últimos meses. Estamos ansiosos por mostrar las nuevas instalaciones a nuestra comunidad. Así que únanse a nosotros el jueves.
El viernes tendremos dos eventos. De 8:15 a 8:45 de la mañana, organizaré un café con el Superintendente para actualizar a la comunidad sobre el proceso de planificación estratégica. La planificación estratégica es un proceso crítico en la vida de un colegio, pero hacerlo de manera que recopile aportes de toda la comunidad es una tarea compleja. Sé que hay muchas preguntas sobre este proceso y espero brindarles una información actualizada y la oportunidad de hacer preguntas el viernes. Incluso si no pueden asistir el viernes, planeo actualizar a la comunidad periódicamente sobre este proceso y también grabaremos el evento.

Welcome back! I trust that you and your families had a rejuvenating and peaceful vacation.
You might be curious about my choice of location for this message. Upon my return, I was greeted by the sight you see in the photograph below. From our front entrance area down these stairs and beyond the ground was torn up and extensive work was being done. This is part of a significant, three-phase project to overhaul our school's sewage system.
I'm here for two reasons. Firstly, to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the maintenance fees. Your support has been pivotal in advancing this crucial infrastructure project.
Secondly, I want to draw a connection between this practical work and our ongoing strategic planning. Over the past twenty years, our school expanded and modified its facilities, often without a comprehensive plan. The current maintenance we are undertaking is, in part, a consequence of those piecemeal decisions. This highlights a broader need: strategic planning is essential, especially in managing our physical infrastructure. Reactive or unplanned maintenance can lead to inefficiencies, or worse, necessitate rework. To prevent such issues, a robust facilities master plan is indispensable.The creation of such a plan is specified in our 2019-2024 strategic plan, but it will be integrated with our new overarching strategic planning process, ensuring a more cohesive and forward-thinking approach to every facet of ACS.The strategic planning process, of course, is not limited to facilities and is critical to all areas of the school to drive forward our educational mission.
Your involvement in this process is crucial. The strategic planning steering committee will soon be hosting focus groups with various community members to gather diverse perspectives and insights. I encourage you to participate in these discussions. Your input will be invaluable in shaping an ACS that is resilient, efficient, and prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the next two decades.

Se estarán preguntando sobre mi elección de ubicación para este mensaje. A mi retorno, fui recibido por la vista que pueden ver en la fotografía de abajo. Desde nuestra entrada principal, bajando por las gradas y más allá, el suelo se encontraba destrozado y se realizó un trabajo extenso. Esto es parte de un importante proyecto de tres fases para renovar el sistema de alcantarillado del colegio.
Me encuentro aquí por dos motivos. En primer lugar, expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento a todos los que han contribuido con los gastos de mantenimiento. Su apoyo ha sido fundamental para avanzar este crucial proyecto de infraestructura.
En segundo lugar, quiero establecer una conexión entre este trabajo práctico y nuestra planificación estratégica en curso. Durante los últimos veinte años, se amplió el colegio y se modificaron sus instalaciones, a menudo sin un plan integral. El mantenimiento actual que estamos llevando a cabo es, en parte, consecuencia de esas decisiones graduales. Esto pone de relieve una necesidad más amplia: la planificación estratégica es esencial, especialmente en lo que se refiere a nuestra infraestructura física. El mantenimiento reactivo o no planificado puede generar ineficiencias o, peor aún, requerir un doble trabajo.
