Happy Halloween! Of course, our big celebrations took place last week. On Friday, we had both the Halloween parade in the elementary school and our whole school Halloween fair in the evening. It was obvious that the pandemic has created pent-up demand for such events because we had an incredible turnout. Our best estimate is that more than 500 people came to the Halloween fair. The crowd was positive, enthusiastic, and fun. It was wonderful to see our campus so alive again.
This week will also be a busy one at ACS, but remember there is no school on Wednesday in honor of All Souls' Day. The exciting focus for this week will be the friendship games. On Tuesday, the whole school will join together in a pep rally in our gym to inspire and encourage our Cougar athletes before they head off to Cochabamba to compete. Our teams will leave La Paz on Wednesday afternoon, and compete on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I am excited to join them to cheer them on and to meet with the leaders of the other schools and look for ways that we can deepen our collaboration for our mutual benefit. Consequently, there will not be a breakfast with the superintendent this Friday, but this new event will return the following week.

¡Feliz Halloween! Por supuesto, nuestra gran celebración tuvo lugar la semana pasada. El viernes tuvimos el desfile de Halloween de primaria, y por la noche tuvimos la feria de Halloween para todo el colegio. Obviamente, la pandemia ha creado una demanda acumulada para este tipo de eventos ya que tuvimos una participación increíble. Estimamos que más de 500 personas asistieron a la feria de Halloween. La multitud fue positiva, entusiasta y divertida. Fue maravilloso ver nuestro campus tan lleno de vida nuevamente.
Esta semana también será muy ocupada en ACS, pero recuerden que no hay clases el miércoles en honor al Día de las Almas. El enfoque emocionante de esta semana serán los Juegos de la Amistad. El martes, todo el colegio se reunirá en el gimnasio para inspirar y alentar a nuestros atletas Cougar antes de su partida a Cochabamba para competir. Nuestros equipos partirán de La Paz el miércoles por la tarde y competirán el jueves, viernes y sábado. Estoy emocionado de unirme a ellos para animarlos y de reunirme con los líderes de los otros colegios, y buscar formas en que podamos profundizar nuestra colaboración para nuestro beneficio mutuo. En consecuencia, no habrá desayuno con el Superintendente este viernes, pero este nuevo evento volverá la semana siguiente.

Last week was an incredible week. First, we hosted the Cougar Cup. There were eight schools that took part, and the competition was so good that no school took first place in more than one event. Our Cougars took first place in Girls Volleyball. Then, they took second in every other event which included: Boys Volleyball, Boys Soccer, and Girls Soccer.
At the end of last week, we celebrated the first Gala at ACS. The Gala raised more than 25,000 USD in gross contributions. This means that we met our goal, and we will be ordering the “bigger” playground equipment that many of you saw illustrated during Family Day Picnic. The Gala was a huge success, not just in terms of money raised, but also in terms of the community spirit that it expressed. We had 174 seats reserved at the Gala, and 83 items were auctioned. It was a night of remembering the past and looking forward to the future. Part of the event celebrated the 43 years of service of Esther Artieda. Students from throughout her career were present, among them were current parents, teachers, administrators, and board members. Two of her last students helped make a video to honor her at the Gala. In another note, Ms. Artieda has never stopped helping the ACS community. In fact, she is currently doing some substitute teaching in High School English. So, you may still see her around the campus.
This week is also a busy week. Tonight, our board meeting will take place at 7 PM in the Theater because our students are busily preparing the auditorium for the Haunted House. On Wednesday, we will also have our General Assembly starting at 6:30 PM in the Theater. During the General Assembly, we will celebrate student accomplishments with student performances, exhibitions of student work, and the acknowledgement of student excellence. The week will cumulate in the Elementary School Halloween Parade on Friday, followed by the Halloween fair from 6:30 – 8:30 PM.
In addition, this week, we will start a weekly special breakfast with the Superintendent and a board member. We will send out random invitations to a small number of parents. If there are additional seats, each week we will invite additional parents from a waiting list. If you would like to join that list, please indicate your interest by completing the linked form. Preference will always be given to parents who have not yet attended.

La semana pasada fue una semana increíble. Primero, organizamos la Copa Cougar. Participaron ocho colegios, y la competencia fue tan buena que ningún colegio obtuvo el primer lugar en más de un evento. Nuestros Cougars obtuvieron el primer lugar en Voleibol femenino. Luego, obtuvieron el segundo lugar en todos los demás eventos, que incluía: Voleibol masculino, fútbol masculino y fútbol femenino.
A finales de la semana pasada celebramos la primera Gala de ACS. La Gala recaudó más de 25.000 USD en aportaciones brutas. Esto significa que cumplimos nuestra meta, y ordenaremos el equipo de juegos “más grande” que muchos de ustedes vieron ilustrado durante el día de Picnic Familiar. La Gala fue un gran éxito, no solo en términos de dinero recaudado, sino también en términos del espíritu comunitario que se expresó. Dos de sus últimos alumnos ayudaron a hacer un video para homenajearla en la Gala. En nota aparte, la señora Artieda nunca ha dejado de ayudar a la comunidad de ACS. De hecho, actualmente está haciendo enseñanza para sustituir en inglés en Secundaria. Por lo tanto, es posible verla aún en el campus.
Esta es también una semana muy ocupada. Esta noche, nuestra reunión de la Directiva se llevará a cabo a las 7:00 pm en el Teatro porque nuestros alumnos están ocupados preparando el Auditorio para la ‘Casa Embrujada’. El miércoles también tendremos nuestra Asamblea General a partir de las 6:30 pm en el Teatro. Welcome back from the break. The second quarter of this year is full of some exciting events. This week, ACS will host the Cougar Cup from Tuesday to Friday. Then, the week will cumulate in the ACS Gala on Saturday. Next week, many high school students will take the PSAT, the Elementary School will celebrate book week, and our general assembly will be on the 26th. Then, that week will cumulate with the Halloween Fair from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Friday.
I also have some logistical changes and plans to announce. We have contracted with an external company to ensure that we have dedicated staff continually looking after all the restrooms at ACS. We want their cleanliness and hygiene to be of the highest quality. In addition, we are making changes to make a long requested service possible. We are in the process of adding additional gates that will allow parents to deliver hot lunches to their children without overburdening our staff. I know that this is a service that is very important to a number of our families. So, be on the lookout for more information once the construction is complete.
Finally, we know that our communication across the school could be improved. This quarter, we will be working on a new system that will help get the information that you need most out to you in a format that is convenient for you. In addition, we will be creating another opportunity for us to interact more directly. This will be in the form of randomized invitations to a breakfast with the superintendent. We hope to initiate this program starting next week.

Bienvenidos de vuelta luego de la vacación. El segundo trimestre de este año está lleno de emocionantes eventos. Esta semana, el ACS será el anfitrión de la Copa Cougar desde el martes hasta el viernes. Luego, la semana culminará con la Gala de ACS el día sábado. La próxima semana, muchos alumnos de secundaria tomarán el examen del PSAT, la escuela de primaria celebrará la semana del libro, y nuestra asamblea General será el 26. También tengo algunos cambios logísticos y planes para anunciar. Although the month of October includes our fall break on the week of the 10th, we still have a very full calendar of activities for you and your children here at ACS. Most of our CWW trips are already in progress, with plenty of pictures of smiling faces making their way back to WhatsApp groups.
Tomorrow on October fourth, while many of the older students are on trips, we have an event for parents in our theater. It is the first in a series of three workshops entitled “Manage Your Family's Screen-Time So It Doesn't Manage You!” It starts at 9:00 AM, and you have two ways to participate. If you click the link or scan the QR code below, you will be able to register for a Zoom link that you can use from wherever you are. Alternatively, you can join us in the ACS theater, where we will watch the presentation together on the big screen. Even if you join us physically in the theater, we recommend registering for a zoom link so that you can participate in the interactive features via your telephone. After the presentation, those joining us physically can stay on for a moderated discussion with ACS staff. I hope to see you there.
When we return from fall break, ACS will host the "Cougar Cup" from the 18th through the 21st of October. We would be happy to welcome you to campus in the evenings to cheer on our Cougars. Then, on the 22nd of October, we will all be looking our best to celebrate ACS's first Gala. Tickets are still available, but they are selling out fast. Don't miss your chance to be a part of making ACS history with this new event. Finally, we will finish this month of activities with our general assembly on the 26th and the Halloween fair on the 28th.
As we bring so many events and people back to campus, I think it is an appropriate time to discuss the more sobering topic of safety. There are two safety concerns that I would like to highlight to our community, both relate to protecting children.
First, both our daily drop-off and pick up as well as our events involve considerable traffic on the roads around our entrances. We want to make sure that ACS students on foot are as visible as possible as they cross the busy roads around school. You can help us by making sure not to park on the zebra stripped cross walks, even for short amounts of time. Cars in the crosswalks, force students to cross at unusual places and decrease their visibility to other cars. Your help is greatly appreciated.
The second safety issue is also one of child protection. It is a topic that is uncomfortable to talk about. Worldwide, one in five women and one in 13 men report having been sexually abused between birth and 17 years of age. More than 90% of abusers are acquaintances or family members of the victim. While it is easy to brush off these statistics and hope that such events won't happen in our community, the fact is that they have happened in international schools around the world and in Bolivian schools. So, we must not let our guard down as we bring more events back to school. Keeping our guard up does not mean closing off our campus or limiting events, but it does mean knowing who the adults are on our campus at any moment and why they are here. We know that it is an inconvenience to sign in and leave an ID when you enter campus. By doing so, however, you are doing your part to send a message to anyone wishing to harm ACS students. The message is that we care about child protection and prioritize it in our community. Thank you for doing your part to help keep ACS students safe.
Aunque el mes de octubre incluye nuestra vacación de otoño en la semana del 10, todavía tenemos un calendario de actividades muy completo para ustedes y sus hijos aquí en ACS. La mayoría de nuestros viajes de CWW ya están en marcha, con muchas fotos de caras sonrientes en los grupos de WhatsApp.
Mañana, 4 de octubre, mientras muchos de los alumnos mayores están de viaje, tendremos un evento para padres en nuestro teatro. Es el primero de una serie de tres talleres que se titulan “Administre el tiempo de pantalla de su familia, para que éste no lo controle a usted!” Comienza a las 9:00 a.m. y tienen dos maneras para poder participar. Si hace clic en el enlace o escanea el código QR a continuación, podrán inscribirse en un enlace de Zoom, y lo pueden usar desde cualquier lugar donde se encuentren. Alternativamente, pueden unirse a nosotros en el teatro de ACS, donde veremos la presentación juntos en la pantalla grande. Aunque se una a nosotros físicamente en el teatro, le recomendamos que se registre en el enlace de Zoom para que pueda participar de las funciones interactivas a través de su teléfono. Cuando regresemos de la vacación de otoño, el ACS organizará la “Copa Cougar”, del 18 al 21 de octubre. Estaremos encantados de recibirlos en el Campus por las noches para alentar a nuestros Cougars. Luego, el 22 de octubre, todos estaremos luciendo lo mejor posible para celebrar la primera Gala de ACS. Las entradas aún están disponibles, pero se están agotando rápidamente. No pierdan la oportunidad de ser parte de la historia de ACS con este nuevo evento. Finalmente, terminaremos este mes de actividades con nuestra Asamblea General el día 26, y la feria de Halloween el día 28.
A medida que traemos tantos eventos y personas de regreso al campus, creo que es un momento apropiado para hablar sobre el tema más aleccionador de la seguridad. Existen dos preocupaciones sobre seguridad que me gustaría destacar a nuestra comunidad, ambas relacionadas con la protección de los niños.
Primero, tanto a la llegada como a la salida diaria de los alumnos, junto con nuestros eventos, implica un tráfico considerable en las calles cercanas a nuestras puertas de entrada. Queremos asegurarnos de que los alumnos de a pie sean lo más visibles posible al cruzar las calles transitadas alrededor del colegio. Pueden ayudarnos asegurándose de no estacionar en las cebras del cruce peatonal, incluso por un corto periodo de tiempo. Los automóviles en los cruces peatonales obligan a los alumnos a cruzar en lugares inusuales y reducen su visibilidad para otros autos. Su ayuda será muy apreciada.
El segundo problema de seguridad es también uno de protección infantil. Es un tema del que es incómodo hablar. A nivel mundial, una de cada cinco mujeres y uno de cada 13 hombres informan haber sido abusados sexualmente entre el nacimiento y los 17 años de edad. Más del 90% de los maltratadores son conocidos o familiares de la víctima. Si bien es fácil ignorar estas estadísticas y esperar que tales eventos no sucedan en nuestra comunidad, el hecho es que han sucedido en colegios internacionales alrededor del mundo y en colegios bolivianos. Por lo tanto, no debemos bajar la guardia a medida que volvamos a traer más eventos al colegio. Mantener la guardia alta no significa cerrar nuestro campus o limitar nuestros eventos, sino saber quiénes son los adultos en nuestro campus en cualquier momento y por qué están aquí. Sabemos que es un inconveniente registrarse y dejar su identificación al ingresar al campus. Sin embargo, al hacerlo, está haciendo su parte para enviar un mensaje a cualquier persona que desee dañar alumnos de ACS. El mensaje es que nos preocupamos por la protección infantil y le damos prioridad en nuestra comunidad. Gracias por hacer su parte para ayudar a mantener seguros a los alumnos de ACS.
