30 August 2021 - A long awaited day

 Dear ACS Community,

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As I write, I can hear the joyous voices of students echoing throughout the ACS campus.  The school is alive once again.  Today is truly a momentous day in the life of ACS.  It has been 1 year, 5 months, and 17 days since classes were last held on campus.  It is a cause for great celebration, but it is also cause for pause and reflection.  

For those of us who are older, it might be possible for us to think of the pandemic as an aberration.  Even so, it has been difficult for us to transition back to going to work every day in a social environment.  For many more of us and for all of our students, this time represents a significant fraction of our lives.  For our youngest students, virtual school may, in fact, be the only modality of education that they have ever known.  Even for our seniors, more than a tenth of their educational career has been virtual.  

Today begins a significant time of transition in all of their lives.  Whatever academic content that they may 'need' to cover in these coming days, it will pale in significance to their need for social and emotional support through this transition.  It will take a strong partnership between teachers and parents to provide that network of support.

As we transition to a new modality of schooling, it is also important that we gather feedback with which to make adjustments to our program.  One important source of that feedback is our parent community.  So, at the end of this first week, I will send you a simple survey designed for easy completion.  The survey consists of seven questions.  Three questions are measures of balance.  Three questions measure quality, and the last is a free response question.  The measures of balance include communication, workload, and the balance of real-time versus any-time learning.  The measures of quality focus on staff effort, academic learning and social and emotional support.  Each week we will give you another opportunity to rate these same areas.  While we expect the response rate to wax and wane as time goes on, we trust that the survey will still be able to alert us to areas that need attention.  Your participation is vital for that.

Al mismo tiempo que les escribo, puedo escuchar las voces alegres de los alumnos en todo el campus de ACS. El colegio vuelve a estar vivo. Hoy es un día verdaderamente trascendental en la vida de ACS. Ha pasado 1 año, 5 meses y 17 días desde la última vez que se llevaron a cabo las clases presenciales en el campus. Es motivo de gran celebración, pero también  de pausa y reflexión.

Para nosotros, los adultos, es posible que consideremos la pandemia como una anomalía. Aún así, nos ha resultado difícil volver a trabajar todos los días en un entorno social. Para muchos de nosotros y para todos nuestros alumnos, este tiempo representa una fracción significativa de nuestras vidas. Para nuestros alumnos más jóvenes, las clases virtuales puede, de hecho, ser la única modalidad de educación que hayan conocido. Incluso para nuestros adultos mayores, más de una décima parte de su vida profesional ha sido virtual.

Hoy comienza un momento muy significativo en la vida de todos. Cualquiera que sea el contenido académico que puedan "necesitar" y que se cubra en los próximos días, va a disminuir en importancia a la necesidad de apoyo social y emocional durante esta transición. Se va a necesitar una alianza sólida entre profesores y padres de familia para brindar esta red de apoyo.

Una fuente importante de esta retroalimentación es nuestra comunidad de padres de familia. Tres de ellas determinan medidas de equilibrio. Tres preguntas miden la calidad y la última es una pregunta de respuesta libre. 23 August 2021 - preparing for hybrid school

 Dear ACS Community,


It is with great pleasure that I am able to report that we have received official permission to open the school in the hybrid modality starting next week on August 30th.  This week will be about preparing you and your families for the start of hybrid school.  We want to give you ample opportunities to understand how the hybrid modality will work because you will need to make a decision.   Basically, our hybrid school plan splits the student body into cohort A and cohort B.  In the first week of school, cohort A will come to school physically while cohort B will connect online.  In the second week, cohort B will attend physically and cohort A will connect online.  This rotation will then continue in this pattern completing a full cycle every two weeks.  One advantage of this system is that if you are uncomfortable with your children attending school physically, you can elect to have them stay at home learning virtually the entire time.  We also recognize that your preference may vary as you come to a better understanding of the hybrid modality.  So, we will give you two different opportunities to declare your preference for fully virtual or hybrid instruction.  The first opportunity starts now.  We ask that you declare your preference by submitting the attached form by Wednesday, August 25th at 9:00 PM.  Whichever modality you choose, your choice will be valid from August 30th through September 10th.  In other words, you will choose for the first full cycle of instruction.  Toward the end of that cycle, we will give you another opportunity to make a choice that will be valid until the October break.   After each parent choice, we will optimize the cohorts.

If you wish your child to have continuous virtual instruction and not come to school, the only action you need to take is to complete one declaration form for each of your children.

If you wish your child to take advantage of the hybrid model (i.e., physically coming to school in one week alternating with a week of virtual learning.  ) There are a few more steps:

  1. Complete the declaration form for each of your children, indicating your choice.
  2. Agree to provide a PCR/Antigen test from one of our partner labs for your child if you have not already done so.
  3. Complete the Cougar Caring Commitments and Informed Consent form.  This form requires that you commit on behalf of yourself and your child to certain behaviors that we know reduce the spread of the virus.  For instance, wearing masks, washing hands, and getting tested when in circumstance that put you at a higher risk of contacting COVID such as travel.  It also asks you to confirm that you have read and understand our biosecurity protocols.  Finally, the form also asks you to affirm that you are aware of the risk of sending your child to school and choose to accept that risk.

You will find that our biosecurity protocols not only describe what we are doing to "Prevent" the virus from entering campus and "Protect" students once they are here, but they also describe how we would "React" to the virus being on campus by testing, tracing and isolating.  These protocols have been carefully developed to international standards.  

We are excited to welcome students to on-campus learning, as well as to provide continuous virtual education for families who prefer to keep their children within the safety of their homes.  We also know you may have many questions.  So, we have designed information sessions throughout this week to answer your questions.  They are linked to this message on the cougar hub along with links to the required forms.

Con mucho placer, quiero informarles que hemos recibido el permiso oficial del Ministerio de Educación para abrir el colegio de forma semipresencial a partir de la próxima semana de día lunes 30 de agosto. Esta semana vamos a prepararnos junto con ustedes y a sus familias para comenzar la instrucción semipresencial. Queremos brindarle la oportunidad de profundizar la manera en que va a funcionar la instrucción semipresencial porque usted deberá tomar una decisión al respecto. Básicamente nuestro plan semipresencial divide el cuerpo estudiantil en cohorte A y cohorte B. Durante la primera semana de clases, los alumnos de cohorte A vendrán a clases semipresenciales físicamente mientras que los alumnos de cohorte B se conectarán en forma virtual. Durante la segunda semana, los alumnos de cohorte B asistirán fisicamente y los alumnos de cohorte A se conectaran de forma virtual. Este patrón de rotación continuará cada dos semanas hasta completar el ciclo. Una ventaja de este sistema es que si no se siente cómodo con la asistencia física de sus hijo(a)s al colegio, puede optar por dejarlos en casa instruyéndose del forma virtual todo el tiempo. También sabemos que su elección puede variar a medida que entienda mejor la instrucción semipresencial.     2. Aceptar proporcionar una prueba de PCR/antígeno nasal en uno de nuestros laboratorios                             asociados si aún no lo ha hecho. 

    3. Completar el formulario  Compromiso de Cuidado y Consentimiento. Con este formulario                          se compromete usted y su hijo(a) a seguir los protocolos de bioseguridad que sabemos reducen la               propagación del virus. Por ejemplo, usar máscaras, lavarse las manos y hacerse la prueba en                       circunstancias en que estén expuestos a mayor riesgo de contagiarse con COVID, como viajar.                    También tiene que confirmar que ha leído y entiende nuestros protocolos de bioseguridad.                         Finalmente, el formulario también le pide que reitere que es consciente del riesgo de enviar a su                  hijo(a) al colegio y que acepta este riesgo.

Nuestros protocolos de bioseguridad  describen, no solo lo que estamos haciendo para "prevenir" que el virus ingrese al colegio y "proteger" a los alumnos una vez en el campus, sino también describen como "reaccionaríamos" al virus por prueba, rastreo y aislamiento.  Estos protocolos se han desarrollado cuidadosamente de acuerdo con los estándares internacionales.

Nos complace dar la bienvenida a los alumnos a la instrucción en el colegio, así como brindar educación virtual continua a las familias que prefieran mantener a sus hijo(a)s dentro de la seguridad de sus hogares. También comprendemos que puedan tener muchas preguntas. Por eso, hemos diseñado sesiones informativas a lo largo de esta semana para responder a sus preguntas. 19 August 2021 - GREAT NEWS

Dear ACS Community,

I am simply delighted to share the results of our visit from the Educational Director of La Paz District Two and his team.  The team toured our school and watched our bio-security training.  Thanks to the careful planning of Dr. Antonieta de Oliveira and our COVID-19 committee as well as the careful implementation of our faculty, staff, and administrators; our visitors were impressed.  While official confirmation will have to wait until next week, they have given us verbal permission to start hybrid instruction on the 30th of August.  This is truly a historic moment in the life of our school community.

Teams at ACS have been planning for this transition for a long time.  So, you will soon begin hearing more from my office, the level principals, and the teachers about our hybrid program and the transition process.  Of course, one of our most important steps, biosecurity training, is already underway.  Please note that due to the current low incidence of COVID in the local community, your child will not need an additional PCR/Antigen test to start hybrid instruction provided they have already submitted a test to attend biosecurity training.  

In another note of good news, after hybrid instruction is underway, we will likely be able to start a limited after school activities program.

Estoy encantado de compartir los resultados de la visita del Director de Educación y su equipo del Distrito 2 de La Paz. Todo el equipo recorrió nuestro colegio y observaron nuestros protocolos de bioseguridad. Gracias a la cuidadosa planificación de la Dra. Antonieta De Oliveira  y el comité para COVID-19, así como la cuidadosa implementación de nuestro personal, profesores y administradores; nuestros visitantes quedaron impresionados.

Si bien la confirmación oficial tendrá que esperar hasta la próxima semana, ya nos han dado permiso verbal para comenzar la instrucción semipresencial el día lunes 30 de agosto. Este es verdaderamente un momento histórico en la vida de nuestra comunidad escolar. El equipo de ACS ha estado planificando esta transición durante mucho tiempo. Por lo tanto, pronto van a recibir más información de mi oficina, de los directores de nivel y los profesores sobre nuestro programa semipresencial y el proceso de transición. Por supuesto, uno de los pasos más importantes son los protocolos de bioseguridad que ya están en marcha. 16 August 2021 - the week ahead

 Dear ACS Community,


The faculty and staff here at ACS are very excited to welcome students on campus for bio-security training.  Last week, they carefully trained and practiced to receive students on campus safely.  You can see some of our procedures briefly highlighted on the poster attached.  More detailed information can be found here in English and Spanish.

Now that students will be returning to campus for bio-security training, our community's thoughts are naturally turning to the possibilities of hybrid instruction.  As you are probably aware, ACS has long had detailed plans for hybrid instruction.  The plans were shared last December, but I have provided a link to an updated presentation for your convenience.  The first step in our plan to transition to hybrid instruction has always been student bio-security training.  Once that step is completed this week, we will be well prepared to move forward with hybrid instruction as soon as we receive authorization to begin.

With regard to authorization, the Ministry of Education stipulates that the decision to authorize one of the three modes of instruction: on-campus (presencial), hybrid (semipresencial), and virtual (a distancia) is up to the district in coordination with the Ministry of Health.  In our case, that decision is made by district number two in La Paz.  As you know, we have applied for and received permission from our district to hold biosecurity training, but we have also applied to offer hybrid (semipresencial) education.  Personnel from the district visited us last year and were very impressed with our biosecurity measures.  They have also confirmed that they will visit the school on Thursday, August 19th during our biosecurity training.  It is our hope that they will be willing to approve our application for hybrid (semipresencial) instruction after the visit.  We recognize other international schools in district two are also in the process of applying to start hybrid instruction, but we are not aware of any school being ahead of ACS in this regard. 

Another common question amongst our community concerns PCR/Antigen testing.  Our main purpose in testing students before starting biosecurity training is to eliminate the possibility that students contracted COVID-19 on their travels during the break or have been subsequently exposed.  Going forward, we will ask that parents have their children tested any time they travel.  In addition, we ask that students be tested if they engage in any activities which bring them into contact with groups or individuals from areas of higher COVID incidence.  Finally, we will require COVID testing of anyone who exhibits symptoms.   We will rely on integrity being a core value of our community trusting everyone to take this precautionary step seriously as we all have a responsibility to protect the health of one another.  In the future, we may require additional COVID testing in response to changes in the pandemic locally or internationally.  

While we do not yet have permission to begin hybrid instruction, please know that our board, our faculty, and our staff all want to bring students back to campus for classes as soon as possible.  Let's hope it is very soon.

Estimados Padres de Familia:

El personal y los profesores de ACS estamos muy emocionados en dar la bienvenida a los alumnos del colegio para la capacitación en bio-seguridad. La semana pasada todos entrenaron y practicaron cuidadosamente las medidas de bio-seguridad para recibir a los alumnos de una manera segura. Usted podrá ver algunos de los procedimientos más destacados en el afiche adjunto.

Cuando los alumnos regresen al colegio para recibir la capacitación en bio-seguridad, la intención de toda nuestra comunidad se dirige naturalmente a la posibilidad de una instrucción semi-presencial. Como ustedes saben, hace ya tiempo que ACS tiene protocolos desarrollados al detalle para la instrucción semi-presencial. Estos planes se compartieron en diciembre pasado, les comparto un Enlace de la presentación para su conveniencia. Uno de los primeros pasos en nuestro plan para la transición a la instrucción semi-presencial siempre fue la capacitación de los alumnos en bio-seguridad. Una vez que sea completado este paso durante esta semana, estaremos preparados para seguir adelante con la enseñanza tan pronto como recibamos la autorización para comenzar clases.

Con respeto a dicha autorización, el Ministerio de Educación estipula que la decisión para abrir el colegio corresponde al distrito en coordinación con el Ministerio de Salud y se basa en una de las tres modalidades de instrucción: presencial (presencial), híbrida (semi-presencial) y virtual (a distancia). En nuestro caso, esta decisión la toma el Distrito 2 de La Paz. Como saben hemos solicitado y recibido el permiso de nuestro Distrito para realizar capacitaciones en bio-seguridad, pero también se solicitó el permiso para comenzar las clase semi-presenciales. El personal del Distrito nos visitó el año pasado y quedaron muy impresionados con nuestras medidas de bio-seguridad. También han confirmado que van a visitar el colegio este jueves en la mañana durante nuestra capacitación en bio-seguridad. Esperamos que se nos otorgue la aprobación a nuestra solicitud de instrucción semi-presencial después de esta visita. Reconocemos que otros colegios internacionales en distrito 2 también están en proceso de esta solicitud, sin embargo, no tenemos conocimiento de qué ningún colegio tenga el tramite de dicho permiso.

Otra pregunta común en nuestra comunidad se refiere a las pruebas de PCR/Antígeno Nasal. Nuestro objetivo principal es que nuestros alumnos cuenten con las pruebas de PCR/Antígeno Nasal antes de comenzar la capacitación en bio-seguridad con el propósito de eliminar la posibilidad de que los alumnos se hayan contagiado de COVID-19 en sus viajes durante el receso, o hayan estado expuestos de alguna manera posterior a esto. En el futuro, pediremos a los padres de familia que hagan la prueba de PCR/Antígeno Nasal a su hijo(a) cada vez que viajen al extranjero o hayan estado expuestos a áreas de mayor incidencia de COVID. Además, pedimos que los alumnos también sean evaluados si participan en alguna actividad que los ponga en contacto con grupos o individuos en áreas de mayor incidencia de COVID. Finalmente, solicitaremos la prueba de COVID a. cualquier persona que presente síntomas.

Esperamos en que la integridad es un valor fundamental de nuestra comunidad, confiando en que todos tomen en serio este procedimiento de precaución ya que todos tenemos la responsabilidad de proteger las salud de los demás. En el futuro, es posible que necesitemos pruebas adicionales de COVID dependiendo de los cambios en la pandemia a nivel local o internacional.

Si bien aún no tenemos permiso para comenzar la instrucción semi-presencial, sepa que nuestros miembros de la junta directiva, nuestro personal docente y nuestro personal administrativo quieren traer a los alumnos de regreso al colegio a pasar clases lo antes posible. Esperamos que sea muy pronto.

Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year

Dear ACS community,

I’m delighted to welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year.  Today, the first day of a new school year, is an exciting day for students, faculty, and parents alike.  As I write, students are getting acquainted with their new schedules, their new teachers, and their new classmates.  Although we have all become accustomed to virtual education, we all hope that today is the last virtual first day of school for all of us. 

I am very pleased to announce that next week we will take one step toward having students back on campus for classes.  Next week we have been authorized to provide in-person bio security training for our students.  While we are not yet permitted to hold classes, this training is an important step in preparing our students for in-person education.  It will also provide our students with an opportunity to meet their teachers, their peers, and acquaint or reacquaint themselves with the school campus.  We are thankful to the Bolivian authorities for giving us this opportunity.  Each student will be given the chance to visit the school for training once during the week.  You will receive more details about the logistics from the level principals.

Estoy muy contento de darles la bienvenida al año escolar 2021-2022. Hoy día es el primer día de este año escolar y es un día muy especial para los estudiantes, profesores y padres de familia. Al mismo tiempo que les escribo, los alumnos están familiarizándose con sus nuevos horarios, con sus profesores y compañeros. Aunque ya estamos acostumbrados a la educación virtual, todos esperamos que hoy día sea el último primer día virtual.

Estoy contento de anunciar que la próxima semana daremos un paso adelante y podamos tener a los alumnos en el colegio. Nos han autorizado para que durante la próxima semana tengamos un entrenamiento de bioseguridad para nuestros estudiantes.

Todavía no nos permiten tener clases presenciales, pero este entrenamiento de bioseguridad es un paso muy importante para preparar a nuestros estudiantes en el caso de clases presenciales.
También los alumnos tendrán la oportunidad de conocer a sus profesores, a sus compañeros y familiarizarse con la infraestructura del colegio. Estamos agradecidos con las autoridades bolivianas por darnos esta oportunidad. Cada alumno podrá visitar el colegio una vez durante la semana. Ustedes van a recibir más detalles acerca de la logística de cada una de las directoras de cada nivel.

Updates and Registration Reminder

 Dear ACS Community,


As we start our second week of faculty orientation and planning, I am delighted to report that preparations for the new school year are going very smoothly.  Having been vaccinated and tested, all our faculty and staff are enthusiastically working together in-person to plan an excellent academic year for ACS students.  


Virtual registration is also moving quickly, and our new online payment platform is now fully functional.  This platform allows you five online payment options and a choice of 1800 locations to pay in cash with the benefit of receiving your invoice/factura online.  Please remember that students must be registered by the fifth of August at 12:30 PM in order to attend the first day of school on the ninth of August.  If you have not done so yet, please follow the instructions at this link to complete the virtual registration process.  You will receive a welcome letter from your level principal within two business days of completing the entire registration process.  Please contact Jackie Teran in the Superintedent’s office if you believe you have completed the process more than two days ago, but have not yet received a welcome letter.


As of today, 2 August, schools in our district of La Paz are not permitted to start in-person classes with students.  The authorities, however, have announced that they are still in the process of studying and analyzing the situation.  While we await their decision about the resumption of in-person classes, we have applied for permission to conduct in-person biosecurity training with students during the first week of classes.  We continue to monitor this fluid situation very closely and will update you as soon as more information is available. 


Regardless of the outcome, school will start next week on Monday, August ninth with a virtual day of instruction.  Our faculty and staff have planned a warm welcome that will include all the details about the academic schedule.  


We wish your children a happy last week of break, and we look forward to welcoming them back to school next week.

Al comenzar la segunda semana de orientación y planificación de los profesores, me complace informar que los preparativos para el nuevo año escolar van muy bien. El registro virtual también avanza rápidamente y nuestra nueva plataforma de pago en línea ahora es completamente funcional. Mientras esperamos su decisión sobre la reanudación de las clases presenciales, hemos solicitado permiso para realizar una capacitación en bioseguridad presencial con los estudiantes durante la primera semana de clases. Continuamos monitoreando esta situación muy de cerca y lo actualizaremos tan pronto como tengamos más información disponible.


Independientemente del resultado, el colegio comenzará la próxima semana el día lunes 9 de agosto con un día de instrucción virtual. Nuestro personal ha planeado una cálida bienvenida que incluirá todos los detalles sobre el horario académico.
