Dear ACS Community,

I had the great pleasure of recently accompanying our ACS Cougars to the friendship games, where our competitors earned ACS a second place finish overall. More important, however, was bringing this experience to all the students from the four schools after years of absence. While I spend much of my time working on the structures and strategies that funnel resources to support our mission, it was wonderful to be able to spend so much time directly interacting the students. It was also inspiring to see the dedication of our coaches, who ensured that the experience was positive for all of our students, no mater what logistical challenges came their way. Furthermore, It is noteworthy that our board members not only steer the ship of ACS, but they row as well. Two of our board members accompanied our athletes as coaches, vividly demonstrating our whole community's support of our students. During this friendship games, we also planned three events for next year. Two will be friendship games for high school students, and one will be a friendship games for middle school students. I'm sure our students are already looking forward to the next round of competition.

It is incredible to think that this is our last full week of school. At the end of this week, we will say farewell to our Seniors, who will return one week later to formally celebrate their graduation. A school year never “winds down”. Instead, it always builds in intensity with a frenetic whirlwind of activity until it comes to an abrupt halt with the departure of students and teachers. During this season, it is important that we all gird ourselves with a little extra patience and compassion for one another, as we all experience emotions more intensely at this time of year.

Tuve el gran placer de acompañar recientemente a nuestros atletas Cougars de ACS a los juegos de la amistad, donde nuestros competidores le concedieron a ACS un segundo lugar. Más importante, sin embargo, fue llevar esta experiencia a todos los alumnos de los cuatro colegios después de años de ausencia. Si bien, paso gran parte de mi tiempo trabajando en las estructuras y estrategias que canalizan nuestros recursos para apoyar nuestra misión, fue maravilloso poder pasar tanto tiempo interactuando directamente con los alumnos. También fue muy inspirador ver la dedicación de nuestros entrenadores, quienes se aseguraron de que la experiencia fuera positiva para todos nuestros alumnos, sin importar los desafíos logísticos que se les presentaran. Además, cabe destacar que nuestros consejeros no sólo dirigen el barco de ACS, sino que también reman. Dos de los miembros del Directorio acompañaron a nuestros atletas como entrenadores, demostrando vívidamente el apoyo de toda nuestra comunidad a nuestros alumnos. Durante estos juegos de la amistad, también planeamos tres eventos para el próximo año. Dos serán juegos de la amistad para alumnos de High school y uno será para los alumnos de middle school. Estoy seguro de que nuestros alumnos ya esperan con ansias la próxima ronda de competencias.

Es increíble pensar que esta es nuestra última semana completa de clases. Al final de esta semana, nos despediremos de nuestros seniors, quienes regresarán una semana después para celebrar formalmente su graduación. Un año escolar nunca "termina". En cambio, siempre aumenta en intensidad con un torbellino frenético de actividad hasta que se detiene abruptamente con la partida de alumnos y maestros. Durante esta temporada, es importante que todos tengamos un poco mas de paciencia y compasión unos por otros, ya que todos experimentamos emociones más intensas en esta época del año.

Dear ACS Community,

This week, ACS students will travel to Santa Cruz to compete in the Friendship Games. For two years, our whole community and especially our student athletes have wondered if and when these games would return. Even after we formally announced them, the pandemic hung a cloud of uncertainty over our plans. Now, however, the week of the games have arrived. Athletes are making final preparations on the fields and courts. The athletic directors are scrambling to ensure that all the arrangements are in order, and parents are making sure their children have packed the right things and are carrying the correct documents. It is a buzz of activity that we have not seen in some time. For those of you who want to follow the games from afar, the school in Santa Cruz has provided the QR code attached to this message. The code will take you to a document with near real-time score updates. We hope you will cheer on our cougars from wherever you are.

On a different note, as my first academic year comes to a close, I am looking for feedback to improve my service to the community. In particular, I would value your input on a four questions survey about my relations with the community. You can find a link here. Faculty and staff will soon receive a more detailed survey. I appreciate your feedback and advice as I strive to do my very best for ACS.

Finally, I want to take this last opportunity to remind our community that the deadline for 2022-2023 financial aid applications is this Wednesday the 18th of May 2022 at midnight.

Esta semana los alumnos de ACS van a viajar a Santa Cruz para competir en los Juegos de La Amistad. Durante los últimos dos años, toda nuestra comunidad y especialmente nuestros alumnos atletas se han preguntado si estos juegos regresarían y cuándo. Incluso después de que los anunciamos formalmente, la pandemia nos tuvo con una nube de incertidumbre sobre nuestros planes. Ahora, sin embrago, ha llegado la semana de los juegos. Los atletas están haciendo los preparativos finales en las canchas. Los directores deportivos se esfuerzan por asegurarse de que todos los arreglos estén en orden, y los padres de familia se aseguren de sus hijos hayan empacado lo necesario y que lleven los documentos correctos.. Es un zumbido de actividad que no hemos visto en mucho tiempo. Para los que quieran seguir los partidos de lejos, el colegio de Santa Cruz ha facilitado un código QR adjunto a este mensaje. En otro aspecto, a medida que mi primer año académico llega a su fin, estoy esperando comentarios para mejorar mi servicio a la comunidad. Dear ACS Community,

The weather has begun to become a little colder, and a number of parents have asked whether we could reduce the use of fans during the chilly weather that La Paz is now experiencing. Our Health and Safety team met today to consider this question and decided that the local incidence of COVID-19 remains low enough to stop using fans. We still encourage students to dress warmly because it will still be important keep the classroom windows open. The free exchange of air between inside and outside is dramatically more effective than any type of filtration or other measures. It will also reduce the risk of spreading other diseases such as influenza.

At this time, the end of the school year is starting to come into view. So, I'm happy to share a few upcoming dates with our community.

30 May—Elementary School Presidential Awards Ceremony
2 June—Elementary School Graduation
2 June—Secondary School Presidential Awards Ceremony
3 June—High School Graduation

All events will have a web link provided, but graduates will also receive a limited number of in-person tickets for the relevant ceremonies.

Finally, I would like to remind parents that applications for financial aid in the 2022-2023 school year are due before midnight on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. Please make sure to get an early start.

Estimada Comunidad de ACS,

Ahora que el clima esta más frío y varios padres de familia han preguntado si podemos reducir el uso de ventiladores durante esta temporada de frío que La Paz esta experimentando, nuestro equipo de Salud y Seguridad se reunió hoy día para considerar esta pregunta y decidió que la incidencia local de COVID-19 sigue siendo lo suficientemente baja como para dejar los ventiladores. Todavía alentamos a los estudiantes a vestirse abrigados porque seguirá siendo importante mantener abiertas las ventadas de las aulas de clase. El libre intercambio de aire entre el exterior y el interior es mucho más efectivo que cualquier tipo de filtración u otras medidas. También reducirá el riesgo de propagar otras enfermedades como la influenza.

En este momento, que el final del año escolar está comenzando a vislumbrarse, estoy feliz de compartir algunas fechas próximas importantes con nuestra comunidad.

Dear ACS Community,

I hope that you had an enjoyable long weekend and are rested for the start of another week. As many of you know, we had an energetic general assembly last week which showcased student talent and an audiovisual exhibition of a student project telling the stories of Venezuelan migrants in La Paz. In addition, we elected new board members. Thank you to everyone who participated in the event, especially to the board candidates, for their commitment to serving our community.

This week, we are celebrating teacher appreciation week at school. The board, the parents, the students, and the administration have all planned ways to show our appreciation. The work of teachers is the heart of all that ACS does. It is teachers who inspire students to be critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and responsible world citizens. On behalf of our whole community, thank you teachers for your dedication, your passion, and your compassion this week and every week. You are appreciated.

Finally, the board has, once again, set aside some resources to provide financial aid for ACS families experiencing temporary hardship. Details about the application process will come out from the business office soon. The deadline for application submission will be approximately two weeks from today. So, please act quickly if you intend to apply.

Espero que hayan tenido un fin de semana largo y agradable y que estén descansados para el comienzo de otra semana. Como muchos de ustedes saben, tuvimos una asamblea general muy activ la semana pasada donde mostramos el talento estudiantil además de una exhibición audiovisual de un proyecto estudiantil que cuenta las historias de los migrantes venezolanos en la ciudad de La Paz. Además elegimos nuevos miembros del Directorio. Gracias a todos los que participaron en este evento, especialmente a los candidatos al Directorio por su compromiso de servir a nuestra comunidad.

Esta semana estamos celebrando la semana de agradecimiento a los profesores en el colegio. El Directorio, los padres, los estudiantes y la administración han planeado formas de mostrar nuestro agradecimiento. El trabajo de los profesores es el corazón de todo lo que hace ACS. Son los profesores quienes inspiran a los alumnos a ser pensadores críticos, aprendices de por vida y ciudadanos del mundo responsables. En nombre de toda nuestra comunidad, gracias a todos los profesores por su dedicación, pasión y compasión esta semana y todas las semanas. Todos son muy apreciados.

Finalmente, el Directorio, una vez mas, ha reservado algunos recursos para brindar ayuda financiera a las familias de ACS que experimentan dificultades temporales. Los detalles sobre el proceso de solicitud saldrán pronto de la oficina comercial. El plazo de presentación de solicitudes será de aproximadamente dos semanas a partir del día de hoy.
