Dear ACS Community,

I know that the announcement concerning the leadership in our secondary school on Friday caused many mixed emotions across our community.  While this is not the appropriate forum to discuss the details, I do want our community to know that these actions were taken with the utmost seriousness, deliberation, and analysis.  In addition, no step was taken without the advice of many professionals.  I recognize that this may not be apparent from the surface, and I do wish it were possible to be much more open about the details.  As you know, the board will host a session on Thursday of this week to discuss leadership in the secondary school.  All parents are welcome to attend.

Looking forward, we will be organizing a series of interview panels as part of our search for a new secondary principal.  These panel will include both parents and students.  We will put out a form in which you can express your interest soon. 

In other news, please be reminded that this week is picture week.  Please refer to the detailed schedule that was emailed last week for the dates and times of your child's picture opportunity.

We often discuss changes in the educational landscape, but this week during their professional development time, our teachers will be exploring a new technology that has created ripples in schools around the world.  That technology is the artificial intelligence portal called ChatGPT.  Among other things, ChatGPT is capable of writing a paper on any topic when given a prompt.  How will this technology impact the way our students will work in the future, and how can we best prepare them for this future that we can only vaguely predict?  This week, our teachers will be exploring these types of questions inspired by work done at other international schools around the world.

Finally, elementary school parents, please be reminded of the STEAM family day coming up on the ninth of March.

Sé que el anuncio acerca del liderazgo de Secundaria el día viernes ocasionó muchas emociones encontradas en nuestra comunidad.  Si bien este no es el foro apropiado para discutir los detalles, quiero que nuestra comunidad sepa que esas acciones se tomaron con la mayor seriedad, deliberación y análisis.  Además, no se dio ningún paso sin el asesoramiento de muchos profesionales. Reconozco que esto puede no ser aparente desde la superficie, y quisiera que fuera posible ser mucho más abierto sobre los detalles. Como saben, la Directiva realizará una sesión el jueves de esta semana para debatir sobre el liderazgo de secundaria.  Todos los padres están invitados a asistir.

Con miras al futuro, organizaremos una serie de paneles de entrevistas como parte de nuestra búsqueda de un nuevo director de secundaria. Este panel incluirá tanto a los padres como a los alumnos. Próximamente publicaremos un formulario en el que podrá manifestar su interés.

En otras noticias, por favor recuerde que esta es la semana de las fotografías.  Consulte el cronograma detallado que se envió por correo electrónico la semana pasada para conocer la fecha y hora de la sesión de fotografía de su hijo.

A menudo hablamos sobre los cambios en el panorama educativo, pero esta semana, durante el horario de desarrollo profesional, nuestros profesores explorarán una nueva tecnología que ha creado ondas en los colegios de todo el mundo. Esa tecnología es el portal de inteligencia artificial llamado ChatGPT. Entre otras cosas, este ChatGPT es capaz de escribir un artículo sobre cualquier tema que se le solicite. ¿Cómo afectará esta tecnología en la manera en que nuestros alumnos trabajarán en el futuro y cómo podemos prepararlos mejor para este futuro que solo podemos predecir vagamente? Esta semana, nuestros profesores explorarán este tipo de preguntas inspiradas en el trabajo realizado en otros colegios internacionales de todo el mundo.

Finalmente, recordarles a los padres de primaria que el día de la familia STEAM ya se acerca, será el 9 de marzo.

Dear ACS Community,

This is a short week at school this week.  I hope you enjoyed an exciting Carnival this past weekend with your family and friends.  This week and next week, students return to their studies without many non-academic events.  Although, next week, we will have a lockdown drill on Tuesday.  On that same day, STUCO will have a bake sale to benefit Esperanza Kids.  

Looking out into the future, the elementary school will have a new event on the 9th of March called STEAM family night.  Please be on the lookout for more information concerning this new event.

Finally, our lost and found is growing very quickly again.  It is almost as full as it was at the end of last semester.  So, please check if you think something of yours could be there.  We will likely need to donate the items to charity at the end of the third quarter.

Esta semana será una semana corta para el colegio.  Espero que hayan disfrutado de un Carnaval emocionante el fin de semana pasado, junto a sus familias y amigos.  Esta semana y la próxima, los alumnos regresan a sus estudios sin muchos eventos no académicos. Aunque, la próxima semana, tendremos un simulacro de encierro el martes. Ese mismo día, STUCO realizará una venta de pasteles a beneficio de los niños de Esperanza.

 

Con miras hacia el futuro, Primaria tendrá un nuevo evento el 9 de marzo llamado noche familiar STEAM. Esté atento a mayor información sobre este nuevo evento.

 

Para finalizar, nuestros objetos perdidos y encontrados están aumentando rápidamente otra vez.  Está casi tan lleno como al final del semestre pasado. Por lo tanto, por favor comprueben si creen que algo suyo podría estar allí. Es probable que tengamos que donar estos artículos a la caridad al final del tercer trimestre.

Dear ACS Community,

As your children may have told you, we continued our focus on emergency preparedness by conducting a safe haven drill today.  In this drill, students all report to a secure area of the campus for safety.  While these drills represent a small disruption, they make a big difference in the safety of our students.

On a lighter note, we will celebrate the Carnival holiday at school on Friday of this week.  The elementary parade will take place in the morning and a secondary celebration will take place in the afternoon.  In addition, please remember that the 20th and 21st are holidays from school in celebration of Carnival.

This morning, I also have some great news to share.  Over the past few weeks, some of you were involved in the search for a new Elementary School Principal.  This search involved input from parents, teachers, and administrators, including our current Elementary School Principal, Maria.  From all the feedback, one candidate rose above the rest, Eric Crabtree.  We made Eric an offer of employment, and this morning he accepted.  Eric will join ACS in August with his partner Chelsea and their son.  Both of them are excellent educators with experience at some of the finest international schools in the world.  We look forward to welcoming them to ACS.

Finally, I would like to raise an important current issue to your consciousness.  That issue is providing relief for the many people impacted by the terrible earthquakes in Turkey.  One of our secondary school students, Deniz Sarvan, has taken on a project to raise funds to help.  Please see his eloquent explanation below, as well as a link for donations.

Hello to all of you,

Once again, I am hosting another campaign to help people in need, this time to help people suffering from the terrible earthquake in my home country, Turkey. As you might have heard, two earthquakes with magnitudes of around 7.5-7.8 consecutively hit the South-East of Turkey, primarily affecting those in that region in Turkey and Syria. 10 cities in Turkey have been affected terribly, and at least 12000 people have been killed. Many have been injured and trapped under the ruins, with thousands of buildings collapsing. Around 10,000 people have been pulled out from under the ruins alive so far. These regions have already started receiving tons of help internationally from other nations. The current freezing weather over there makes it even more difficult to sort things out. This destroyed area is also a historically and culturally rich location where many religions and cultures were created. 

My father and I have set up a funding source to aid these people. Please spread this to as many people as possible, and donate yourself if you are willing to. Here is the link:

Como sus hijos les habrán dicho, continuamos con nuestro enfoque en el plan de preparación para emergencias y realizamos hoy un simulacro de refugio seguro. En este simulacro, todos los alumnos se dirigen a un área segura del campus para su seguridad. Si bien estos simulacros representan una pequeña interrupción, marcan una gran diferencia en la seguridad de nuestros alumnos.

 

En una nota más ligera, celebraremos el feriado de Carnaval en el colegio el viernes de esta semana.  El desfile de primaria tendrá lugar en la mañana y la celebración de secundaria será por la tarde.  Además, por favor recuerde que los días 20 y 21 son feriados en celebración del Carnaval.

 

Esta mañana, también tengo buenas noticias para compartir.  En las últimas semanas, algunos de ustedes participaron en la búsqueda de un nuevo Director de Primaria. Esta búsqueda involucró aportes de padres, profesores y administrativos, incluida nuestra Directora actual de Primaria, María.  De todos los comentarios, un candidato se destacó por encima del resto, Eric Crabtree. Le hicimos una oferta de empleo a Eric y esta mañana él aceptó. Eric se unirá a ACS en agosto con su pareja Chelsea y su hijo. Ambos son excelentes educadores con experiencia en algunos de los mejores colegios internacionales del mundo. Estamos esperando darles la bienvenida a ACS.

 

Finalmente, me gustaría plantear un importante tema actual a su conciencia. Este tema brinda alivio a muchas personas afectadas por los terribles terremotos en Turquía. Uno de nuestros alumnos de secundaria, Deniz Sarvan, ha emprendido un proyecto para recaudar fondos para ayudar.  Dear ACS Community,

At their most recent board meeting, the ACS board of trustees approved the academic calendar for the next school year.  You can always find it on the cougar hub, but a link is included in my message for your convenience.

This past week and weekend at a job fair in the United States, we interviewed many candidates for our open teaching positions.  In addition, on the weekend, we conducted our last panel interview for candidates for our elementary principal position.  Finally, a huge number of candidates have shown an interest in our business manager position.  Our staff is now very busy working on all of these searches to identify the very best candidates for ACS. 

This week different groups of teachers across the school will have training on science, literacy, and mathematics.  Experience and research from educational systems around the world point to the importance of the professional development of teachers as one of the most critical keys to student success.  An article in an educational journal puts it this way, “The best professional development is long-term, cyclical, collaborative, and well coordinated across levels”.  This is precisely what we are striving for at ACS as we minimize one-off efforts and maximize the building of long-term relationships with consultants who can engage our faculty in cyclical, collaborative, and coordinated work together.  This is work that will directly impact the instruction of both current and future ACS students.

Please keep in mind that the 20th and 21st of this month will be days off school for the carnival holiday.

En la reunión de la Directiva más reciente, la Junta Directiva de ACS aprobó el calendario académico para el próximo año escolar.  Lo pueden encontrar siempre en el Cougar Hub, pero, para su conveniencia, incluyo en mi mensaje este enlace link .
 
La semana y el fin de semana pasados, en una feria de trabajo en los Estados Unidos, entrevistamos a muchos candidatos para nuestros puestos docentes vacantes. Además, el fin de semana, llevamos a cabo nuestra última entrevista de panel a los candidatos para nuestro puesto de director de primaria.  Finalmente, una gran cantidad de candidatos han mostrado interés en nuestro puesto de gerente administrativo. Nuestro personal está muy ocupado trabajando en todas estas búsquedas para identificar a los mejores candidatos para ACS.
 
Esta semana, diferentes grupos de profesores del colegio tendrán capacitación en ciencias, alfabetización y matemáticas.  La experiencia y la investigación de los sistemas educativos de todo el mundo señalan la importancia del desarrollo profesional de los docentes como una de las claves más críticas para el éxito de los alumnos.  Un artículo en una revista educativa lo expresa de esta manera: "El mejor desarrollo profesional es a largo plazo, cíclico, colaborativo y bien coordinado en todos los niveles".  Esto es precisamente por lo que nos estamos esforzando en ACS a medida que minimizamos los esfuerzos únicos y maximizamos la construcción de relaciones a largo plazo con consultores que pueden involucrar a nuestros docentes en un trabajo conjunto cíclico, colaborativo y coordinado. Este es un trabajo que tendrá un impacto directo en la instrucción de los alumnos actuales y futuros de ACS.
 
Por favor tengan en cuenta que los días 20 y 21 de este mes serán días libres por el feriado de carnaval.
