 Dear ACS Community,

I hope you are enjoying the holiday season.  Our celebrations continue this week with our elementary holiday concerts.  In addition, please remember that dismissal will be at noon on Friday to start the break. On behalf of the ACS community, we wish you a wonderful break with family and friends.  

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2023 and usher in 2024, this is the ideal time to tell you a little more about our strategic planning efforts at ACS.  The Steering Committee for Strategic Planning met for the first time last week and began the work to envision a bright future for ACS.  Our strategic planning will have four major steps: understanding our internal and external context, coming to community consensus on purpose and direction, developing actions to enable our vision and monitoring progress.  Some of these steps will take place simultaneously, and there will be numerous places where it is imperative that we have community involvement.  Early next year, we will form teams that will use our new foundation standards from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges to examine our internal context in all functional areas of the school.  We will be looking for student, parent, and teacher volunteers to be a part of this effort.  In addition, the Steering Committee for Strategic Planing has already started working on new statements of direction and purpose for ACS.  They will soon be conducting focus groups with all stakeholders to start the process of building consensus around themes and ideas.  Please be alert for opportunities to join one of these groups early next year.  

It is wonderfully exciting to be crafting a new story for ACS, and I hope you will be involved.

Espero que estén disfrutando de la temporada navideña. Nuestras celebraciones continúan esta semana con nuestros conciertos festivos de Primaria. Además, por favor recuerden que el viernes la salida será al mediodía dando inicio a las vacaciones. A nombre de la comunidad ACS, les deseamos unas maravillosas vacaciones con sus familiares y amigos.

Mientras nos preparamos para despedirnos del 2023 y dar la bienvenida al 2024, este es el momento ideal para hablarles un poco más sobre nuestros esfuerzos de planificación estratégica en ACS.  El Comité Directivo de Planificación Estratégica se reunió por primera vez la semana pasada y comenzó a trabajar para visualizar un futuro brillante para ACS.  Nuestra planificación estratégica tendrá cuatro pasos principales: comprender nuestro contexto interno y externo, llegar a un consenso comunitario sobre el propósito y la dirección, desarrollar acciones que permitan nuestra visión y monitorear el progreso. Algunos de estos pasos se llevarán a cabo simultáneamente y habrá numerosos lugares donde será imperativo que tengamos participación comunitaria. A principios del próximo año, formaremos equipos que utilizarán nuestros nuevos estándares básicos de la Asociación de Colegios y Universidades de la Nueva Inglaterra para examinar nuestro contexto interno en todas las áreas funcionales del colegio.  Estaremos buscando estudiantes, padres y profesores voluntarios para ser parte de este esfuerzo. Además, el Comité Directivo de Planificación Estratégica ya ha comenzado a trabajar en nuevas promulgaciones de dirección y propósito para ACS.  Pronto conducirá grupos focales con todas las partes interesadas para iniciar el proceso de creación de consenso en torno a temas e ideas.  Manténganse atentos a las oportunidades de unirse a uno de estos grupos a principios del próximo año.

Es maravillosamente emocionante crear una nueva historia para ACS y espero que participen.

 Dear ACS Community,

With last week's concerts our holiday events have begun.  The holiday time is always a busy time at school.  We are happy to have already had some opportunities to share it with you, and we look forward to others.  

Tonight is a special night because it will be the first meeting of our Steering Committee for Strategic Planning.  This group includes representation from students, teachers, administrators, parents, and board members.  Tonight they begin their work guiding a process of transforming ACS.  In their guiding role, it will be critical to get input from all groups of stakeholders.  So, there will be many opportunities for others to be involved.  Please be on the lookout for those.

This past week, I happened to come across a video in Spanish that highlights why this work is so important.  You can view it below.  It suggests that schools have been especially slow to change in light of radical changes around them.  She suggests that both the physical and mental infrastructure of schools has stayed much the same over the past one hundred years, but other areas are changing rapidly.  This is especially poignant when you consider that the video predates the pandemic.  Consider as a data point the fact that at least five of our board members over the past two years have conducted a significant fraction of their work remotely.  This would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.  

So, it is urgent that we rethink how ACS currently adds value to our community and how it could do so in the future.  I am eager for the Steering Committees to take up this exciting work tonight.

Con los conciertos de la semana pasada han comenzado nuestros eventos navideños. La época navideña es siempre un momento muy ocupado en el colegio. Estamos felices de haber tenido ya algunas oportunidades de compartirlo con ustedes, y esperamos otras más.

Esta noche es una noche especial porque será la primera reunión de nuestro Comité Directivo para la Planificación Estratégica. Este grupo incluye representación de estudiantes, profesores, administradores, padres y miembros de la junta. Esta noche empiezan su trabajo guiando un proceso de transformación de ACS. En su papel de guía, será fundamental obtener la opinión de todos los grupos de interesados. Así que habrá muchas oportunidades para que otros participen. Por favor, estén atentos a ellas.

La semana pasada, me encontré con un video en español que destaca por qué este trabajo es tan importante. Pueden verlo a continuación. Sugiere que las escuelas han sido especialmente lentas en cambiar a la luz de los cambios radicales que las rodean. Sugiere que tanto la infraestructura física como la mental de las escuelas se ha mantenido más o menos igual durante los últimos cien años, pero otras áreas están cambiando rápidamente. Esto es especialmente significativo si se tiene en cuenta que el video es anterior a la pandemia. Considere como un dato el hecho de que al menos cinco de nuestros miembros de la junta durante los últimos dos años han realizado una fracción significativa de su trabajo de forma remota. Esto habría sido impensable hace unos años.

 Dear ACS Community,

I hope that your families were able to spend time together during the Thanksgiving break.  I know I am thankful to be a part of this school community and I am also thankful for the opportunity to work together with the community to revision the future of ACS.  

Just before the break, we had an opportunity to begin that with the faculty and a talented group of students.  During that session, we examined what we value in the ACS experience.  Then we considered how we could use time both through the year and through the day to better support the things that we value.  Next week, our Steering Committee for Strategic Planning will have their inaugural meeting to begin their initial work.  They will start by ascertaining whether our current mission and vision truly represents what our community values, or whether they need to be adjusted to better reflect our current needs and intentions.

This week we have a number of school events.  Today (Monday) we will have our board meeting.  Then on Wednesday, the Middle and High School drama students will put on a showcase entitled “The Act of Life”.  On Thursday night and Friday morning, we have two (repeated) opportunities for Middle School parents to come out and learn about changes to our middle school mathematics program and how they can best support their children.   It will be a hands-on event where you will get to do mathematics yourself.    On Friday, we will have a secondary concert.  Finally, I will host an event for faculty kids at my home entitled “Tea with Santa” on Saturday.  I look forward to seeing many of you at the shows and events this week.  

Elementary parents, mark your calendars for an elementary school mathematics night next week.  It will take place on the morning of 8 December.  It will also be an active session that will focus on how you can best support your children.

Espero que sus familias hayan podido pasar tiempo juntas durante las vacaciones de Acción de Gracias. Estoy agradecido de ser parte de esta comunidad escolar y también estoy agradecido por la oportunidad de trabajar junto con la comunidad para planificar y proyectar el futuro de ACS.

Justo antes del receso, tuvimos la oportunidad de comenzar esta construcción con los profesores y un grupo talentoso de estudiantes. Durante esa sesión, examinamos lo que valoramos de la experiencia ACS. Luego consideramos cómo podríamos utilizar el tiempo durante el año y asimismo durante el día para apoyar mejor las cosas que valoramos. La próxima semana, nuestro Comité Directivo de Planificación Estratégica tendrá su reunión inaugural para comenzar su trabajo inicial. Comenzarán por determinar si nuestra misión y visión actuales realmente representan lo que nuestra comunidad valora, o si es necesario ajustarlas para reflejar mejor nuestras necesidades e intenciones actuales.

Esta semana tenemos varios eventos escolares. Hoy (lunes) tendremos nuestra reunión de la Junta Directiva. Luego, el miércoles, los estudiantes de teatro de secundaria presentarán una obra titulada “El acto de la vida”. El jueves por la noche y el viernes por la mañana, tenemos dos oportunidades (repetidas) para que los padres del nivel intermedio vengan y aprendan sobre los cambios en nuestro programa de matemáticas  y cómo pueden apoyar mejor a sus hijos. Será un evento práctico en el que ustedes podrán resolver problemas matemáticos. El viernes tendremos un concierto a cargo del nivel secundario.  Finalmente, el sábado organizaré un evento en mi casa titulado “Té con Santa” para los hijos y nietos de todo nuestro personal. Espero ver a muchos de ustedes en los espectáculos y eventos de esta semana.

Padres de primaria, marquen en sus calendarios la noche de matemáticas de la escuela primaria la próxima semana. Tendrá lugar la mañana del 8 de diciembre. También será una sesión activa que se centrará en cómo pueden apoyar mejor a sus hijos.

 Dear ACS Community,

Last week and weekend we successfully hosted the high-school friendship games, in which our boys soccer team took first place.  Congratulations to all our athletes and coaches who participated in this event, and thank you to all the supporters who came out to cheer our athletes on.  A special thanks goes out to our athletic director, Elba Beyer, for all the work she did to organize the event. 

This week is a short week but a busy one.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, will be our elementary STEAM day.  Then on Wednesday afternoon, we have a special opportunity for teachers and students to come together to envision some possible futures for ACS.  Students, please be on the lookout for an invitation to this event.  It will take place from 3:30–5:00 PM in the auditorium underneath the elementary library.

This week ends with a school holiday in honor of Thanksgiving.  Whether or not you celebrate the holiday, we wish you a joyful break filled with gratitude and family togetherness.

La semana pasada y el pasado fin de semana organizamos con éxito los juegos de la amistad de Secundaria, en los que nuestro equipo de fútbol masculino obtuvo el primer lugar. Felicitaciones a todos nuestros atletas y entrenadores que participaron en este evento, y gracias a todos los seguidores que vinieron a animar a nuestros atletas. Un agradecimiento especial a nuestra directora atlética, Elba Beyer, por todo el trabajo que realizó para organizar el evento.

Esta semana es corta pero ocupada. Mañana martes será nuestro día STEAM de Primaria. Luego, el miércoles por la tarde, tenemos una oportunidad especial para que profesores y alumnos se reúnan para imaginar algunos futuros posibles para ACS. Alumnos, estén atentos a una invitación para este evento. Se llevará a cabo de 3:30 a 5:00 p. m. en el auditorio debajo de la biblioteca de Primaria.

Esta semana termina con un feriado escolar en honor al Día de Acción de Gracias. Ya sea que celebren o no esta festividad, les deseamos un feliz descanso lleno de gratitud y unión familiar.

 Dear ACS Community,

I'm sure you are also breathing a sigh of relief this afternoon, knowing that the person who made the threats against schools in La Paz is now with the police.  We can now turn with greater confidence and peace of mind to the events of the week.  

This week, of course, we will be hosting the high-school friendship games.  The celebrations will start on Wednesday with a Pep Rally, in which we will show our support for our student athletes.  The games themselves will run from Thursday to Saturday.  For many of us, the games represent an existing few days spent supporting our athletes.  For our coaches and competitors, these games represent the culmination of months of preparation.  Thank you in advance to our athletic director, Elba Beyer, and all of our coaches for all the work you have done preparing for this week.  

The games this week are entitled the "Friendship Games" because they are intended to promote friendship between the four schools and the three cities of La Paz, Santa Cruz, and Cochabamba.  As hosts, I hope we can all look for ways to promote friendship throughout the games among the students, parents, teachers, and administrators at the four schools.  

I look forward to seeing you at the games, and have a great week ahead.

Estoy seguro de que usted también estará respirando aliviado esta tarde al saber que el autor de las amenazas contra las escuelas de La Paz ya está con la policía. Ahora podemos abordar con mayor confianza y tranquilidad los acontecimientos de la semana.

Esta semana, por supuesto, organizaremos los juegos de la amistad de la escuela secundaria. Las celebraciones comenzarán el miércoles con un Pep Rally, en el que mostraremos nuestro apoyo a nuestros estudiantes atletas. Los juegos en sí se desarrollarán de jueves a sábado. Para muchos de nosotros, los juegos representan unos pocos días dedicados a apoyar a nuestros atletas. Para nuestros entrenadores y competidores, estos juegos representan la culminación de meses de preparación. Gracias de antemano a nuestra directora atlética, Elba Beyer, y a todos nuestros entrenadores por todo el trabajo que han realizado preparándose para esta semana.

 Dear ACS Community,

I hope you enjoyed your weekend.  Last Wednesday, we had an incredible turn-out for our Halloween carnival, even though it was on a rescheduled date.  It was great to see the campus so alive in the evening.  Thank you to everyone involved, including parents, students, and teachers.  I do want to say a special thank you, however, to Andy Mendez, Frankie Kerscher and their STUCO teams for all their hard work.  

On another note, we have nearly finished our nomination process and will soon start composing our steering committee for strategic planning.  There is still time to show your interest through the link in my message.  We will keep the survey open through tomorrow (Tuesday night).  

We had the flurry of activity associated with our Halloween events last week, and next week we will host the High School Friendship games.  So, you might be happy to know that this week is a relatively quiet normal week.  There are no whole school evening events scheduled at the school.  Of course, weeks like this are not idle.  Our teachers are very busy pushing forward the educational mission of our school.  In addition, they are meeting to plan the short and midterm future of our educational program.  

Finally, I do want to announce an off-campus event that you may have an interest in attending.  Some of our students will be performing on the stage at the Hard Rock Cafe tomorrow night.  I'm sure our young musicians would appreciate your support.

Espero que hayan disfrutado su fin de semana. El miércoles pasado tuvimos una asistencia increíble para nuestro festival de Halloween, a pesar de que se realizó en una fecha reprogramada. Fue fantástico ver el campus tan animado por la noche. Gracias a todas las personas involucradas, incluyendo a los padres, alumnos y profesores.  Sin embargo, quiero enviar un agradecimiento especial a Andy Méndez, Frankie Kerscher y su equipo de STUCO por todo su arduo trabajo.

 

Por otro lado, ya estamos a punto de terminar nuestro proceso de nominación y pronto comenzaremos a formar nuestro comité directivo para la planificación estratégica. Todavía tienen tiempo de mostrar su interés a través de la liga de mi mensaje. Mantendremos la encuesta abierta hasta mañana (martes por la noche).

 

Tuvimos una gran actividad asociada con nuestros eventos de Halloween la semana pasada, y la próxima semana organizaremos los juegos de la Amistad de Secundaria. Por lo tanto, le alegrará saber que esta es una semana normal relativamente tranquila. No tenemos programado ningún evento nocturno que involucre a todo el colegio.  Por supuesto que semanas como ésta no están inactivas.  Nuestros profesores están muy ocupados impulsando la misión educativa de nuestro colegio. Además, se están reuniendo para planificar el futuro a corto y mediano plazo de nuestro programa educativo.

 

Finalmente, quiero anunciar un evento fuera del campus al que quizás les interese asistir. Algunos de nuestros estudiantes actuarán en el escenario del Hard Rock Café mañana por la noche. Estoy seguro de que nuestros jóvenes músicos agradecerán su apoyo.

Dear ACS Community,

Fortunately, the air quality is improving and we are back to school again.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as we implemented virtual learning plans and rescheduled activities.  Please take note that our Halloween parade and our Halloween fair have both been rescheduled for this Wednesday.  We hope to see you and your family at these exciting annual events.

I also want to say thank you to everyone who attended our General Assembly last week.  If you did not get the chance, you can find a recording at the link in my message.

One important topic that we discussed in the General Assembly is the start of our Strategic Planning process.  The process will have a number of stages that will evolve over time.  The first step will involve coming to consensus as a community as to whether our current mission, vision, and values are right for the future of ACS or if they require change.  Next, we will begin planning how to realize our vision for the future through each of the core areas of the school.  This will include work on academics, finances, and facilities.  During the general assembly, Leo Varone, articulated some exciting ideas about our path forward from the facilities perspective.  I encourage you to look at his part of the General Assembly video.  It is very compelling.

As we contemplate this process, we will need to create a steering committee to guide our community.  The steering committee will meet approximately once per month for the remainder of the academic year.  In addition, some thought and work will be required between meetings.  If you like strategic thinking, and are excited about the idea of articulating a bright future for ACS, please consider nominating yourself for the steering committee.   You can do so at the link in my message.  Please consider joining us.

Afortunadamente, la calidad del aire está mejorando y volvemos al colegio. Gracias por su paciencia y comprensión mientras implementamos planes de aprendizaje virtual y reprogramamos actividades. Por favor, tomen nota de que nuestro desfile de Halloween y nuestra feria de Halloween han sido reprogramados para este miércoles. Esperamos verlos a ustedes con sus familias en estos emocionantes eventos anuales.

Asimismo, quiero agradecer a todos los que asistieron a nuestra Asamblea General la semana pasada. Si no tuvieron la oportunidad, encontrarán una grabación en el enlace de mi mensaje.

Un tema importante que tratamos en la Asamblea General es el inicio de nuestro proceso de Planificación Estratégica. El proceso tendrá una serie de etapas que irán evolucionando con el tiempo. El primer paso implica llegar a un consenso como comunidad sobre si nuestra misión, visión y valores actuales son correctos para el futuro de ACS o si requieren cambios. Luego, comenzaremos a planificar cómo hacer realidad nuestra visión para el futuro a través de cada una de las áreas centrales del colegio. Esto incluirá trabajo académico, financiero e instalaciones. Durante la asamblea general, Leo Varone articuló algunas ideas interesantes sobre nuestro camino a seguir desde la perspectiva de las instalaciones. Los animo a que vean su parte del video de la Asamblea General. Es muy convincente.

Dear ACS Community,

This past week and weekend, I was able to accompany our middle school athletes and scholars to the Friendship Games in Cochabamba.  While we won some games and lost others, I was very proud of how our students conducted themselves and played the games.  This was even recognized by the hosts when they awarded ACS the Certificate of Sportsmanship.  I can think of several examples that particularly impressed me.  At one point, it was thought that some of our math bowl team members would not be able to make the contest due to a schedule conflict.  A number of our other students stepped up, volunteering to participate if the rest of the team couldn't make it.  In the end, they were not needed, but the fact that they volunteered speaks volumes about their commitment and willingness to persevere despite obstacles.  In another instance, an injured player who could no longer compete in her normal sport, joined the cheerleading squad supporting our other teams.  Even our ACS parents, blew up balloons to provide more visible support during the cheerleading competition.  These and other instances are what made me especially proud to be a Cougar during the competition. 

We have a busy week this week.  Today we have our normal board meeting.  Then the General Assembly will take place on Wednesday.  In addition, our teachers will be participating in an internal professional development conference, and we will host a Kindergarten showcase for new families on Wednesday.  Then, Thursday will be Secondary School conferences.    Finally, the week will cumulate with the Halloween Carnival on Friday.

La semana pasada y el fin de semana pasados, pude acompañar a nuestros atletas y estudiantes de secundaria a los Juegos de la Amistad en Cochabamba. Si bien ganamos algunos juegos y perdimos otros, me sentí muy orgulloso de cómo se comportaron y jugaron nuestros estudiantes. Así lo reconocieron incluso los anfitriones cuando concedieron a ACS el Certificado de Deportividad. Se me ocurren varios ejemplos que me impresionaron especialmente. Hubo un momento en el que se pensó que algunos de los miembros de nuestro equipo de matemáticas no podrían participar del concurso debido a un conflicto de horarios. Varios de nuestros otros estudiantes dieron un paso al frente y se ofrecieron como voluntarios para participar si el resto del equipo no podría asistir. Al final, no se los necesitó, pero el hecho de que se ofrecieran como voluntarios dice mucho de su compromiso y voluntad de perseverar a pesar de los obstáculos. En otro caso, una jugadora lesionada que ya no podía competir en su deporte habitual se unió al equipo de porristas apoyando a nuestros otros equipos. Incluso nuestros padres de ACS inflaron globos para brindar un apoyo más visible durante la competencia de porristas. Estos y otros casos son los que me hicieron sentir especialmente orgulloso de ser un Cougar durante la competencia.

Esta semana tenemos una semana ocupada. Hoy tenemos nuestra reunión normal de la Directiva. Luego, la Asamblea General tendrá lugar el miércoles.  Además, nuestros profesores participarán en una conferencia interna de desarrollo profesional; y el día miércoles organizaremos una exhibición de Jardín de Infancia KG3 y KG4 para nuevas familias. Luego, el jueves serán las conferencias de Secundaria. Finalmente, la semana culminará con el Carnaval de Halloween el viernes.

Esperamos verlos en uno o más de estos eventos.

 Dear ACS Community,

I hope you had a joyful break with your families and friends.  Today marks the first day of the second quarter.  This week, we will be sending our middle school athletes off to Cochabamba to compete in the Friendship Games.  Thank you to Elba and all our coaches for organizing this opportunity for our student athletes.  In addition, please consider attending the elementary school parent coffee on Friday morning.  Finally, we will have an announced fire drill on Tuesday.  Drills are an important part of safety and security preparedness on campus.  Their teachers will prepare them, but drills can sometimes be a little scary for our youngest learners.  

A significant event in the life of our school is coming up next week.  It is our general assembly on the night of Wednesday the 25th of October, starting at 7:00 PM.  The general assembly will celebrate student achievements, provide an update on the state of the school, and kick-off a process of strategic planning for the future.  We would love to welcome you to campus to join us for the general assembly on Wednesday the 25th.

Esta semana enviaremos a nuestros atletas de secundaria a Cochabamba para competir en los Juegos de la Amistad. Gracias a Elba y a todos nuestros entrenadores por organizar esta oportunidad para nuestros estudiantes atletas. Además, considere asistir al café para padres de la escuela primaria el viernes por la mañana. Finalmente, tendremos un simulacro de incendio anunciado el martes. Los simulacros son una parte importante de la preparación de seguridad en el campus. Sus profesores los prepararán, pero los simulacros a veces pueden asustar un poco a nuestros alumnos más jóvenes.

Es nuestra asamblea general la noche del miércoles 25 de octubre, a partir de las 7:00 p.m. La asamblea general celebrará los logros de los estudiantes, proporcionará una actualización sobre el estado de la escuela e iniciará un proceso de planificación estratégica para el futuro.  Dear ACS Community,

I'm glad to hear that so many of you were able to join together at the ACS Family day picnic and celebrate together.  I want to congratulate the Gala Committee once again for a job well done in bringing our new playground to fruition.  Thanks also to all the teachers, administrators, and staff who made sure our students are off on their CWW trips.  

As you know, I am at a conference of superintendents in the region.  It has been a very productive meeting with 17 heads of school representing more than 10,000 students at schools in nations throughout our hemisphere from the US to Argentina.  While some of our specific problems and specific contexts are unique, we have a lot in common with our neighbors, and I am working to collaborate more effectively around these areas of commonality.  

With CWW, this is a quieter week than normal around the ACS campus.  Remember, next week will also be fall break.

Me alegra saber que muchos de ustedes pudieron unirse al picnic del día familiar de ACS y celebrar juntos. Como saben, estoy en una conferencia de superintendentes de la región. Si bien algunos de nuestros problemas y contextos específicos son únicos, tenemos mucho en común con nuestros vecinos y estoy trabajando para colaborar de manera más efectiva en torno a estas áreas comunes.

Con CWW, esta es una semana más tranquila de lo normal en el campus de ACS. Recuerde, la próxima semana también habrá vacaciones de otoño.

 Dear ACS Community,

This is an exciting week in the life of ACS.  Today we will have a small ceremony inaugurating our new playground and thanking those who made it possible.  Today's event acts as a culmination of all the work that went into the Gala.  For the ACS community, however, there is an even greater significance than just having a new playground for our kids.  Our ACS Community has come together around a shared purpose and achieved a wonderful success.  This is just a beginning, our community is actively working to improve ACS in many other ways, from academics to facilities.  Together, we can do great things.  

Today's ceremony will largely be for the adults involved, but the students will also cut a ribbon tomorrow and get a chance to play on the new playground.  Family day picnic, of course, will be a great chance for the whole community to see the new playground filled and in action.  

This week, you also have another chance to see our Cougars in action during the High School Cougar Cup.  It will run from today until Thursday.  Then, of course, the week ends with the Family Day Picnic on Saturday.  We hope that your family will take the opportunity to join the ACS Community on our campus this week and weekend.

Esta es una semana emocionante en la vida de ACS. Hoy tendremos una pequeña ceremonia para inaugurar nuestro nuevo parque infantil y agradecer a quienes lo hicieron posible. El evento de hoy viene a ser la culminación de todo el trabajo realizado para la Gala.  Para la comunidad de ACS, sin embargo, hay una importancia aún mayor que simplemente tener un nuevo patio de juegos para nuestros niños. Nuestra Comunidad se ha unido en torno a un propósito compartido y ha logrado un éxito maravilloso. Este es solo el comienzo, nuestra comunidad está trabajando activamente para mejorar ACS de muchas otras maneras, desde el punto de vista académico hasta las instalaciones.  Juntos podemos lograr grandes cosas.

Dear ACS Community,

I'm delighted to announce that our playground is nearing completion.  We will hold a small ceremony at 6 PM on the evening of our next board meeting, 25 September 2023, to inaugurate the playground.  We will send invitations to our gala committee members whose hard work made the playground possible.  It was, of course, a community effort to raise funds and so we are happy to welcome any other community members who would like to join us to mark this milestone in ACS history.   

Then, of course, everyone will get a glimpse of the new playground during Family Day Picnic on the 30th of September.  It is with regret that I won't be able to join the community for Family Day Picnic.  The rescheduled date conflicts with an annual meeting of Superintendents across the region.  So, I will enviously watch the pictures emerge on social media from afar.  As this meeting nears, It is an appropriate time to talk about the benefits of our networks in the international school world.  While most international schools do not have any formal structural relationship with one another, there are organizations that bring them together.  About a decade before ACS became a formal school, the US government started assisting some international schools that offered education patterned after that offered in the United States.  By 1964, these programs were organized into an office in the US State Department called the Office of Overseas Schools.  This office continues to support ACS with a modest grant each year.  It also encouraged and supported the development of regional associations worldwide, such as AMISA (American International Schools in the Americas) in our region.  AMISA was established in part to facilitate communication and cooperative action between and among association schools and to improve the quality of teaching and learning in association schools.  As ACS embarks on a period of rapid change and improvement, it is more critical than ever for us to learn from and contribute to our peer schools around the region and around the world.  That is just what I will be doing, and I hope to bring back new ideas about how we can grow and improve.

Finally, I want to remind you that our Middle School athletes are competing in the Cougar Cup this week.  It starts today, and runs through Thursday.  Please see the linked schedule so that you can come out and support our Cougars.

Me complace anunciar que nuestro patio de juegos está ya a punto de ser terminado. Celebraremos una pequeña ceremonia a las 18:00 horas la noche de nuestra próxima reunión de la Directiva, el 25 de septiembre de 2023, para inaugurar oficialmente este patio de juegos. Enviaremos invitaciones a los miembros de nuestro comité de gala cuyo arduo trabajo hizo posible el patio de juegos. Fue, por supuesto, un esfuerzo comunitario para recaudar fondos, por lo que estamos felices de darle la bienvenida a cualquier otro miembro de la comunidad que desee unirse a nosotros para marcar este hito en la historia de ACS.

 Dear ACS Community,

We are moving into an exciting time of the year.  Next week, we will host the Middle School Cougar Cup.  The week after next will be the High School Cougar Cup.  Later, we will have our Family Day Picnic, followed by the CWW trips.  

I also want to remind parents that our College Counselor is preparing virtual college kick-off meetings at different grade levels throughout the high school.  While intense work on the college admissions process does not really get underway until the 11th grade, we want all of our students and families to know what to expect early.  Please be on the lookout for announcements about these meetings.  

I want to conclude by announcing a change in the excellence award and excellence scholarship process.  In the past, ACS has used a holistic process to make these awards, but the new regulations from the Ministry of Education specify that only grades can be used in the process.  While, as a school, we value viewing students through a holistic lens, we must follow the regulations to stay in compliance with the Ministry of Education.  So, the awards this year will only be based on grades.

Quiero finalizar anunciando un cambio en el proceso de premios y becas de excelencia. En el pasado, ACS ha utilizado un proceso holístico para otorgar estas concesiones, pero las nuevas regulaciones del Ministerio de Educación especifican que solo se pueden utilizar calificaciones en el proceso. Si bien, como colegio, valoramos ver a los estudiantes a través de una lente holística, debemos seguir las regulaciones para cumplir con el Ministerio de Educación. Por lo tanto, los premios de este año sólo se basarán en las calificaciones.

Dear ACS Community,

I hope you had a great weekend with your families, and that you took advantage of the beautiful ambiance of the city yesterday without the presence of cars.

Today, I would like to focus on an extremely important topic that represents one of our most important duties as educators.  That topic is child protection or child safeguarding.  Many of you are aware that there were some very grave incidents that occurred recently in Santa Cruz that caused all schools to reflect on the safeguards that we have in place.  Here at ACS, we will soon begin a comprehensive child protection audit based on resources and best practices as articulated by the Global Safeguarding Collaborative.  That will result in a prioritized action plan and possibly changes to our child protection handbook.  In addition, we will be taking the immediate and concrete step of altering our bathroom doors so that they cannot be closed and locked from the inside.  Please note that we have inspected all bathrooms and determined that this step can be accomplished while preserving privacy.  Working to create a safer environment for all children is a continuous process which we at ACS take very seriously.

On a lighter note, our extracurricular activities are now in full swing, and I'm delighted to share with you a few images of some of our younger students enjoying them.  

To close, I want to update you on our final construction project that began in the summer.  That project is our playground.  The equipment for the playground has almost all been installed.  In addition, the concrete pad is near completion.  The final step will be to install flooring that is capable of cushioning falls from the equipment.  These final steps will take a few weeks more due to the curing time required for the materials involved.  We have tentatively scheduled our Family Day Picnic on the 30th of September to coincide with the completion of the new playground.   We can't wait to welcome you to the campus to open this new facility.  It is made possible by both the generosity of those who attended last year's gala and by families who diligently pay their tuition and fees every year.

Espero que hayan tenido un gran fin de semana con sus familias y que ayer hayan aprovechado el hermoso ambiente de la ciudad sin la presencia de automóviles.

Hoy me gustaría centrarme en un tema sumamente importante que representa uno de nuestros deberes más importantes como educadores. Ese tema es la protección infantil o la salvaguarda de los niños. Muchos de ustedes saben que recientemente ocurrieron algunos incidentes muy graves en Santa Cruz que hicieron que todos los colegios reflexionaran sobre las salvaguardas que tenemos implementadas. Aquí en ACS, pronto comenzaremos una auditoría integral de protección infantil basada en los recursos y las mejores prácticas según lo articula el Global Safeguarding Collaborative. Eso dará como resultado un plan de acción priorizado y posiblemente cambios en nuestro manual de protección infantil.  Además, tomaremos la medida inmediata y concreta de modificar las puertas de nuestros baños para que no puedan cerrarse y bloquearse desde adentro. Tengan en cuenta que hemos inspeccionado todos los baños y determinado que este paso se puede realizar preservando la privacidad. Trabajar para crear un entorno más seguro para todos los niños es un proceso continuo que en ACS nos tomamos muy en serio.

En una nota más leve, nuestras actividades extracurriculares ahora están en pleno apogeo y estoy encantado de compartir con ustedes algunas imágenes de algunos de nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes disfrutándolas.

Para terminar, quiero informarles sobre nuestro proyecto de construcción final que comenzó en el verano. Ese proyecto es nuestro patio de recreo. Casi todo el equipamiento del parque infantil está instalado. Además, la plataforma de hormigón está casi terminada. El último paso será instalar un pavimento que sea capaz de amortiguar las caídas del equipo. Estos pasos finales llevarán algunas semanas más debido al tiempo de curado requerido por los materiales involucrados.  Hemos programado tentativamente nuestro día de picnic familiar para el 30 de septiembre para que coincida con la finalización del nuevo patio de recreo.  Dear ACS Community,

We enjoyed welcoming a great new group of ACS parents at a special event last weekend.  Our enrollment now stands at 569, and it is still growing.  In fact, we are hopeful that students currently in the admissions' pipeline will elevate our numbers to 575 or beyond.  Thank you to our faculty and staff for their efforts to make ACS an ever more desirable school to which families entrust the education of their children.

Today will be the second to last installment describing the physical improvements to our campus over the summer.  You can see from the attached pictures that both the inside and the outside of the classroom buildings at ACS were repaired and repainted.  What is less obvious is that our teams took time to do these repairs right.  They found some old repairs that were done improperly, and they took time to correct the work.  This illustrates the growth in professionalism and attention to detail on our maintenance team.  The work this summer also showcases the increased oversight and the higher standards to which our external contractors are being held.  In all areas of the school, we are committed to using the tuition and fees that you provide as efficiently as we possibly can to deliver a high-quality education in an environment that supports and enhances learning.  We thank our facilities team for doing their utmost to make this possible.  

As the month of August comes to a close, I want to say that it continues to be a joy to work with our new team of academic administrators.  The team's collective work overflows with both ideas and action steps that will take academics at ACS to a new level.  It is truly a privilege to be at ACS during this time of excitement and renewal.

Hoy será la penúltima entrega describiendo las mejoras físicas a nuestro campus durante la vacación del verano.  Pueden ver en las fotografías adjuntas que tanto el interior como el exterior de los edificios de aulas de ACS fueron reparados y repintados.  Lo que es menos obvio es que nuestros equipos se tomaron el tiempo para hacer bien estas reparaciones. Encontraron algunas reparaciones antiguas que se habían hecho incorrectamente y se tomaron el tiempo para corregir el trabajo.  Esto ilustra el crecimiento en el profesionalismo y la atención al detalle de nuestro equipo de mantenimiento.  El trabajo de este verano también nos muestra la mayor supervisión y los estándares más altos a los que se exige a nuestros contratistas externos.  Dear ACS Community,

At this point, I hope you have had the opportunity to meet our Elementary Principal, Eric Crabtree; our secondary principal, Dr. Tim Warren; and our Director of Learning and Teaching, Dr. Ann Peterson. 

If you did not meet them at the back-to-school night, I hope you will see them greeting students at the door.  As we have added a new senior academic leader, I recognize that it is important to clarify communication procedures.  As always, it is essential to direct questions to whomever is closest to the topic at hand.  This often starts with the classroom teacher.  Questions about the whole Elementary School should still be directed to the Elementary Principal, and questions about the whole Secondary School should still go to the Secondary Principal.  Doctor Peterson's role is a whole-school role focused on teacher professional development, as well as improving and aligning our K-12 curriculum.  You will soon have opportunities to engage with her around these topics in parent meetings.  

Today, I would also like to add another installment to my descriptions of our summer work on the school physical plant.  In particular, I would like to talk about an improvement that you will never see.  After many years of ad-hoc repairs and extensions, the plumbing in our elementary school was in desperate need of 

renovation.  I think the only way to appreciate the extent of the renovation and repair that we did in this area is to examine a few of the attached photographs.  You will notice that floors, walkways and grassy areas all had to be opened in order to accommodate the extensive work to replace large pipes.  While this work is now covered with dirt, it is not unimportant.  It was critical to maintain the health and safety of our campus.  In addition, water leakage was beginning to cause subsidence in our buildings.  Thankfully, these problems are now corrected, and our systems have been brought up to a high standard.  Again, we appreciate the timely tuition and fee payments that have allowed us to do these necessary improvements.

Además, las fugas de agua comenzaban a provocar hundimientos en nuestros edificios. Afortunadamente, estos problemas ahora se corrigieron y nuestros sistemas se han actualizado a un alto nivel. Una vez más, apreciamos los pagos oportunos de la matrícula y las cuotas que nos han permitido hacer estas mejoras necesarias.

 Dear ACS Community,

It has been a delight to have all the students back on campus after the break.  With the return of the students, the buildings have now come back to life with the sights and sounds of school life.  We also look forward to welcoming all of you at our back-to-school nights this week.

I promised that I would, over the course of a few weeks, share with you some of the improvements that we have made over the summer.  Although they are two of our smaller improvements, I want to start with two improvements that directly impact student learning.  This summer, we constructed a new physics laboratory.  In addition, after many years of disrepair, our observatory is now fully functional.

When our laboratories at ACS were first designed, physics and chemistry were often taught in the same

laboratory.  In fact, many times, the physics and chemistry teacher were one and the same person.  The laboratory, however, was designed to support chemistry instruction with sinks, gas, and chemical resistant laboratory benches. This year we hired a new chemistry teacher in addition to our long-time physics teacher.  So, we needed to create a dedicated space for physics apart from our chemistry laboratory.   

For the past 40 years, extensive research has been conducted concerning physics education at the high-school, college, and university levels.  One persistent finding, now substantiated with tens of thousands of student data points, is that interactive engagement methods of teaching yield learning gains that are more than twice that of traditional lecture methods.  This is true at the high-school through the university level.  At high-schools with small classes, it was often possible to rearrange desks to support more active teaching, but at

universities with large lecture halls, they had to design new furniture and new rooms to support interactive teaching.  A particular table design proved quite useful, and was adopted by a large number of universities including prestigious institutions such as MIT.  Capitalizing on the work done by these universities, we took this table design and had it locally produced.  It now anchors our new physics laboratory.  It will, of course, take time to optimize teaching and learning in this new space, but the space now encourages, not impedes, the kind of active engagement shown to be most effective.

In addition, to our work in the laboratory, we have completely rehabilitated our observatory.  The telescope has been repaired and reconditioned, both inside and out.  The dome has also been refurbished.  Just last night, I took a group of students up to enjoy viewing the southern cross and other sights in the night sky.  We have an interested group of students and teachers who plan to get our whole community involved in using this newly operational facility.  Please be on the lookout for these opportunities.

As with all of our facilities work, none of this would be possible without the tuition and fees from our ACS families.  Thank you.

Ha sido un placer tener a todos los estudiantes de vuelta en el campus después de las vacaciones. Prometí que en el transcurso de algunas semanas, compartiría con ustedes algunas de las mejoras que hemos realizado durante el verano. Aunque son dos de nuestras mejoras más pequeñas, quiero comenzar con dos mejoras que impactan directamente en el aprendizaje de los estudiantes. Este verano, construimos un nuevo laboratorio de física. Además, después de muchos años de deterioro, nuestro observatorio ahora es completamente funcional.

 

Cuando nuestros laboratorios se diseñaron por primera vez, física y química a menudo se enseñaban en el laboratorio.  De hecho, muchas veces, el profesor de física y el de química eran la misma persona. El laboratorio, sin embargo, fue diseñado para apoyar la enseñanza de química con lavamanos, mesas de laboratorio resistentes a gases y productos químicos. Este año contratamos a un nuevo profesor de química además de nuestro antiguo profesor de física. Entonces, era necesario crear un espacio dedicado a física aparte de nuestro laboratorio de química.

Durante los últimos 40 años, se ha llevado a cabo una amplia investigación sobre la educación física en los niveles de colegios secundarios, institutos y universidades. Un hallazgo persistente, ahora corroborado con decenas de miles de puntos de datos de estudiantes, es que los métodos interactivos de enseñanza producen ganancias de aprendizaje que son más del doble que los métodos tradicionales de dar clase. Esto es cierto en desde secundaria hasta el nivel universitario.  En secundaria con clases pequeñas, a menudo era posible reorganizar los escritorios para apoyar una enseñanza más activa, pero en universidades con grandes salas de conferencias, tuvieron que diseñar nuevos muebles y nuevas salas para apoyar la enseñanza interactiva. Un diseño de mesa en particular resultó bastante útil y fue adoptado por un gran número de universidades, incluidas instituciones prestigiosas como el MIT. Aprovechando el trabajo realizado por estas universidades, tomamos este diseño de mesa y lo hicimos producir localmente. Ahora es el pilar de nuestro nuevo laboratorio de física. Por supuesto, tomará tiempo optimizar la enseñanza y el aprendizaje en este nuevo espacio, pero el espacio ahora fomenta, y no impide, el tipo de participación activa que ha demostrado ser más eficaz.

 

Además de nuestro trabajo en el laboratorio, hemos rehabilitado por completo nuestro observatorio. El telescopio ha sido reparado y reacondicionado, tanto por dentro como por fuera. La cúpula también ha sido reformada. Justo anoche, llevé a un grupo de estudiantes a disfrutar viendo la cruz del sur y otras vistas en el cielo nocturno. Tenemos un grupo interesado de estudiantes y profesores que planean involucrar a toda nuestra comunidad en el uso de esta nueva instalación operativa. Estén atentos a estas oportunidades.

 Dear ACS Community,

It is hard to believe that this will be my final message for the 2022-2023 school year.  Last Friday we celebrated the last day of school for our seniors, and this past weekend I was happy to see many of you at the color run in support of operation smile.  

This week is filled with graduations, award ceremonies, and shows.  I look forward to seeing many of you on campus in the following days to celebrate these end-of-year activities.

As I reflect on this year, I am genuinely thankful to be making this recording without a mask.  I'm also pleased with all the activities and opportunities that we were able to provide for students in this first full post-pandemic year.  As I look forward to next year, I am excited to welcome three new members to our senior leadership team.  I also eagerly anticipate the impact that this new team will have on student learning across ACS.   

I wish all of you joy, rest, and relaxation during the upcoming break.  I hope it is a time of making memories while you reconnect with family and friends.

Remember that Thursday will be a half day of school, and have a great break ahead.

Es difícil creer que este será mi mensaje final para el año escolar 2022-2023. El viernes pasado celebramos el último día de clases para nuestros seniors, y este fin de semana pasado me alegró ver a muchos de ustedes en la carrera de colores en apoyo de operación sonrisa.

Esta semana está llena de graduaciones, ceremonias de premiación y espectáculos. Espero ver a muchos de ustedes en el campus en los próximos días para celebrar estas actividades de fin de año.

A medida que reflexiono sobre este año, estoy genuinamente agradecido de hacer esta grabación sin barbijo. También estoy contento con todas las actividades y oportunidades que pudimos brindar a los alumnos en este primer año completo posterior a la pandemia.  Mientras espero con ansias el próximo año, estoy emocionado de dar la bienvenida a tres nuevos miembros a nuestro equipo de Liderazgo Senior.  También anticipo con entusiasmo el impacto que tendrá este nuevo equipo en el aprendizaje de los estudiantes en ACS.

Les deseo a todos ustedes alegría, descanso y relajación durante las próximas vacaciones. Espero que sean momentos para crear recuerdos mientras se reconectan con familiares y amigos.

Recuerden que el jueves será medio día de clases.  Que tengan una gran vacación.

 Dear ACS Community,

This week at ACS, our end-of-year activities will be in full swing.  This morning we just had a wonderful award ceremony honoring the achievements of our Elementary students.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will honor our student athletes.  Then on Thursday, the student council will host the prom.  Finally, the week will culminate with a farewell to our senior class. 

I also have good news to share with you about next year.  Our hiring for next year is finally complete.  Next fall we will welcome a teaching couple who will be joining us after having taught in Taiwan for most of the last decade.  He is an experienced AP English teacher and she will be teaching Chemistry.  In addition, we will welcome an experienced Social Studies teacher from New York.  Please watch your social media in the next two weeks for additional information about these new faculty members.

It is hard to believe that next Thursday the first of June will be our final day of school.  Please remember that it will be a half day.  Finally, our ACS students in the Operation Smile Club are organizing a 5k Color Run on Sunday, May 28 at 8:00 am.  Tickets are on sale now (operationsmile@acslp.org).

Esta semana en ACS, nuestras actividades de fin de año estarán en pleno apogeo. Esta mañana tuvimos una maravillosa ceremonia de premiación en honor a los logros de nuestros estudiantes de Primaria. El martes y miércoles, honraremos a nuestros estudiantes atletas. Luego, el viernes, el consejo estudiantil será el anfitrión del baile de graduación. Finalmente, la semana culminará con una despedida a nuestra clase senior.

 

También tengo buenas noticias para compartir con ustedes sobre el próximo año. Nuestra contratación para el próximo año finalmente está completa. El próximo otoño daremos la bienvenida a una pareja de maestros que se unirá a nosotros después de haber enseñado en Taiwán durante la mayor parte de la última década. Él es un profesor de AP inglés con experiencia y ella enseñará química. Además, daremos la bienvenida a un experimentado profesor de Estudios Sociales de Nueva York.  Estén atentos a sus redes sociales durante las próximas dos semanas para obtener información adicional sobre estos nuevos miembros del profesorado.
