Dear ACS Community,
It has been a delight to have all the students back on campus after the break. With the return of the students, the buildings have now come back to life with the sights and sounds of school life. We also look forward to welcoming all of you at our back-to-school nights this week.
I promised that I would, over the course of a few weeks, share with you some of the improvements that we have made over the summer. Although they are two of our smaller improvements, I want to start with two improvements that directly impact student learning. This summer, we constructed a new physics laboratory. In addition, after many years of disrepair, our observatory is now fully functional.
When our laboratories at ACS were first designed, physics and chemistry were often taught in the same
laboratory. In fact, many times, the physics and chemistry teacher were one and the same person. The laboratory, however, was designed to support chemistry instruction with sinks, gas, and chemical resistant laboratory benches. This year we hired a new chemistry teacher in addition to our long-time physics teacher. So, we needed to create a dedicated space for physics apart from our chemistry laboratory.
For the past 40 years, extensive research has been conducted concerning physics education at the high-school, college, and university levels. One persistent finding, now substantiated with tens of thousands of student data points, is that interactive engagement methods of teaching yield learning gains that are more than twice that of traditional lecture methods. This is true at the high-school through the university level. At high-schools with small classes, it was often possible to rearrange desks to support more active teaching, but at
universities with large lecture halls, they had to design new furniture and new rooms to support interactive teaching. A particular table design proved quite useful, and was adopted by a large number of universities including prestigious institutions such as MIT. Capitalizing on the work done by these universities, we took this table design and had it locally produced. It now anchors our new physics laboratory. It will, of course, take time to optimize teaching and learning in this new space, but the space now encourages, not impedes, the kind of active engagement shown to be most effective.
In addition, to our work in the laboratory, we have completely rehabilitated our observatory. The telescope has been repaired and reconditioned, both inside and out. The dome has also been refurbished. Just last night, I took a group of students up to enjoy viewing the southern cross and other sights in the night sky. We have an interested group of students and teachers who plan to get our whole community involved in using this newly operational facility. Please be on the lookout for these opportunities.

Un diseño de mesa en particular resultó bastante útil y fue adoptado por un gran número de universidades, incluidas instituciones prestigiosas como el MIT. Aprovechando el trabajo realizado por estas universidades, tomamos este diseño de mesa y lo hicimos producir localmente. Ahora es el pilar de nuestro nuevo laboratorio de física. Además de nuestro trabajo en el laboratorio, hemos rehabilitado por completo nuestro observatorio. El telescopio ha sido reparado y reacondicionado, tanto por dentro como por fuera. La cúpula también ha sido reformada. Justo anoche, llevé a un grupo de estudiantes a disfrutar viendo la cruz del sur y otras vistas en el cielo nocturno. Tenemos un grupo interesado de estudiantes y profesores que planean involucrar a toda nuestra comunidad en el uso de esta nueva instalación operativa. Estén atentos a estas oportunidades.
