Dear ACS Community,
We have taken another step on the path toward the further opening of the campus. Today marked the start of food service. We are thankful that Lonchera has been able to deliver a quality product in a very short amount of time, and we look forward to deepening our partnership with them as they tailor their product to your needs.
While most of my messages have been about the logistics of the hybrid model of school, I would also like to share a little about some of the work that is going around all over the school. As I have gotten to know ACS, I have been extremely impressed with the great potential that is present among the students, staff, faculty, administration, board, and community. Our challenge is to turn that great potential into the capacity to improve outcomes for our students.
One example of how this manifests itself comes from the faculty. On the faculty side, we are re-energizing one of the strategic priorities from the 2019-2024 strategic plan. Namely, to continue to shift instructional practice from a teacher-centered approach to a student-centered approach. To those of you who are not educators, such a goal might sound a little cryptic. Essentially, the historic approach to education was teacher centered. It viewed students as blank slates. Teachers prepared a fixed body of material without regard to student needs. A student centered approach, in contrast, highlights the need to meet students where they are and challenge them to grow. It provides students with voice, choice, and agency in their learning. This is precisely the right time to see this transition to completion. Throughout the pandemic, students, teachers, and parents all observed how online education could effectively replicate teacher-centered education. It has become abundantly clear, however, that the unique value we can add is through student-centered, in-person education, and we are building capacity with that goal in mind.

Hemos dado un paso más en el camino hacia una mayor apertura del campus. Hoy se inició el servicio de almuerzos. Si bien la mayoría de mis mensajes han sido sobre la logística del modelo semipresencial en el colegio, también me gustaría compartir con ustedes un poco acerca del trabajo que estamos realizando dentro del colegio. A medida que voy conociendo ACS, he quedado muy impresionado con el gran potencial que esta presente en todos los alumnos, el personal, los profesores, la administración, la Junta de Directores y la comunidad. Nuestro desafío es convertir este gran potencial en la capacidad de mejorar los resultados de nuestros alumnos.
Un ejemplo de cómo esto se manifiesta proviene de los profesores, a través de ellos estamos revitalizando una de la prioridades estratégicas del plan estratégico 2019-2024. Es decir, continuar cambiando la práctica de instrucción de un enfoque centrado en el profesor a un enfoque centrado en el alumno. Para algunos de ustedes que no son educadores, este objetivo puede sonar un poco difícil de entender. Esencialmente el enfoque histórico de la educación se centró en el profesor. Consideraba a los alumnos como pizarras en blanco. Los profesores preparaban el material sin tener en cuenta las necesidades del alumno. Un enfoque centrado en el alumno, por el contrario, destaca la necesidad de encontrar a los alumnos donde están y desafiarlos a crecer. Brinda a los alumnos voz, elección y logros en su aprendizaje. Este es precisamente el momento adecuado para ver esta transición hasta su finalización. A lo largo de la pandemia, alumnos y padres de familia observaron como la educación virtual podía replicar de manera efectiva la educación centrada en el profesor. Sin embargo, ha quedado muy claro que el único valor que podemos agregar es a través de la educación centrada en el alumno y en forma presencial y estamos construyendo ideas con este objetivo en mente.
