Dear ACS Community,
Today is a big day in the life of ACS. This afternoon, our pool will finally reopen for student swimming lessons. After numerous repairs and false starts, the water is clean and warm. Happy swimming kids!
Next Saturday, we will have the first ACS Family Day Picnic in some time. If you, like me, have never been to an ACS Family Day Picnic, you may be wondering what it is all about. The event starts at 11AM and runs until 4PM. During that time, there will be games set-up by students, faculty, and parents. There will also be plenty of food to buy and even a raffle. Most of all, it is a time for our ACS community to meet and socialize. I look forward to seeing you there.
Next month, we will be revitalizing our Cougar Parent University by partnering with the Near East South Asia council of international schools to offer a webinar series entitled Parents as Partners: Manage Your Family's Screen-time So it Doesn't Manage You. The speaker will be Joy Marchese, a renown author and the founder of Positive Discipline UK. The dates will be:
- October 4 at 9:00 AM
- November 15 at 10:00 AM
- December 6 at 10:00 AM
We also hope to enhance the events with some ACS-specific discussions. Please be on the lookout for more information.
Finally, today, I would like to share with you some of my thoughts about what it means for us to strive toward our mission of being a model of excellence in educating students. When we think about being a model of excellence, I would like to shift our perspective from a local one to a global one.
In the whole world, there are only 194 schools that are recognized as by the United States Department of State as assisted schools. ACS is one of them. These schools have many similarities. Most use the same standards and curriculum that we do. They hire the same consultants, send staff to the same trainings, and compete for the same teachers. So, when I think about being a model of excellence, I think about doing so compared to these peer schools. To help with those comparisons, I compiled a list of those 194 schools in countries that border Bolivia or in countries where a current ACS student was born. The graph attached shows the grade 12 tuition at those schools. I have highlighted the local 12th grade tuition at ACS using ACS green. One thing jumps out almost immediately. That is, tuition at ACS is higher than only three other schools. You might think this can be explained by the fact that the cost of living in Bolivia is about 36% of that in the US. Unfortunately, that can't explain everything. India's cost of living is only 29% of that in the US, but the tuition at the American School of Bombay as well as the American Embassy School in New Delhi are both about $34,000 USD annually.
So, what does this have to do with excellence? I am determined to give your children the same quality of education that children are getting at these other schools, even though they are paying four and a half times the price in some cases. This will not be easy. About every expenditure, I must ask not only whether it helps us meet our mission, but whether it helps us meet our mission better than any other expenditure. We must be lean, efficient, and uncompromising in order to be a model of excellence in this sense. We must continually reexamine everything that we do.
Last year, we expended an enormous effort to put our non-academic house in order. This year we are rapidly upskilling our middle level leadership as well as our faculty with the help of external consultants. This is one of our most important expenditures as it directly impacts the quality of your child's educational experience. This is just the start. I intend to show you rapid and continuous improvement throughout the school as we chase excellence. Excellence for us will be nothing short of being the best value proposition for education in the world.

Hoy es un gran día en la vida de ACS. Esta tarde, nuestra piscina finalmente se reabrirá para las clases de natación de los alumnos. Luego de numerosas reparaciones, y falsos comienzos, el agua está limpia y tibia. Feliz natación niños!
El próximo sábado tendremos el primer Picnic Familiar después de un largo tiempo. Si es que usted, al igual que yo, nunca ha asistido al Picnic familiar de ACS, se estará preguntando de qué se trata. El evento comienza a las 11:00 am y se extenderá hasta las 4:00 pm. Durante ese tiempo, habrá juegos organizados por alumnos, profesores y padres. También habrá mucha comida para comprar e incluso una rifa. Sobre todo, es un momento para que nuestra comunidad de ACS se reúna y socialice. Espero verlos ahí.
El próximo mes, revitalizaremos nuestra Universidad para Padres Cougar al asociarnos con el consejo de colegios internacionales del Cercano Oriente y el Sur de Asia para ofrecer una serie de seminarios web titulados Padres como Socios: Administre el Tiempo de Pantalla de su Familia para que éste No lo Controle a Usted. La oradora será Joy Marchese, autora de renombre y fundadora de Positive Discipline UK. Las fechas serán:

Finalmente, hoy me gustaría compartir con ustedes algunos de mis pensamientos sobre lo que significa para nosotros luchar para que nuestra misión sea un modelo de excelencia en la educación de los alumnos. Cuando pensamos en ser un modelo de excelencia, me gustaría cambiar nuestra perspectiva de una local a una global.
En todo el mundo, sólo has 194 colegios que son reconocidos por el Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos como colegios asistidos. El ACS es uno de ellos. Estos colegios tienen muchas similitudes. La mayoría usa los mismos estándares y plan de estudios que nosotros. Contratan a los mismos consultores, envían personal a las mismas capacitaciones y compiten por los mismos profesores. Entonces, cuando pienso en ser un modelo de excelencia, pienso serlo en comparación con estos colegios. Para ayudar con estas comparaciones, compilé una lista de esos 194 colegios en países que limitan con Bolivia, o en países donde nació un alumno actual de ACS. El gráfico adjunto muestra la matrícula del grado 12 en esos colegios. He resaltado la matrícula local del grado 12 en ACS usando el color verde de ACS. Una cosa salta a la vista casi de inmediato. Y es que la matrícula de ACS es más alta que solo en otros tres colegios. Se podría pensar que esto puede explicarse por el hecho de que el costo de vida en Bolivia es aproximadamente el 36% de costo de vida en los Estados Unidos. Lamentablemente, eso no puede explicarlo todo. El costo de vida de la India es sólo el 29% del de los Estados Unidos, pero la matrícula en el Colegio Americano de Bombay, así como en el Colegio de la Embajada Americana de Nueva Delhi tiene un costo de alrededor de $34,000 USD al año.
Entonces, qué tiene esto que ver con la excelencia? Estoy decidido a brindar a sus hijos la misma calidad de educación que reciben los niños es estos otros colegios, aunque en algunos casos estén pagando cuatro veces y medio el precio. Esto no será fácil. Acerca de cada gasto, debo preguntar no sólo si nos ayuda a cumplir nuestra misión, sino si nos ayuda a cumplir nuestra misión mejor que cualquier otro gasto. Debemos ser ágiles, eficientes e intransigentes para ser un modelo de excelencia en este sentido. Debemos re examinar continuamente todo lo que hacemos.
El año pasado hicimos un enorme esfuerzo para poner en orden nuestra casa no académica. Este año estamos capacitando rápidamente a nuestro liderazgo de nivel medio, así como a nuestros profesores con la ayuda de consultores externos. Este es uno de nuestros gastos más importantes ya que afecta directamente la calidad de la experiencia educativa de su hijo. Este es sólo el comienzo. Tengo la intención de mostrarles una mejora rápida y continua en todo el colegio mientras perseguimos la excelencia. La excelencia para nosotros será nada menos que ser la mejor propuesta de valor para la educación en el mundo.
